Box Office Weekend Winners: ‘Deool Band 2’ Goes Bigger In 2nd Weekend, ‘Drishyam 3’ and ‘Karuppu’ Stay on Top, ‘Obsession’ Opens Strong in India
Regional cinema dominated the box office chart this past weekend amid underwhelming performances by Hindi films.
“Deool Band 2” has emerged as another success story for Marathi cinema following Riteish Deshmukh's “Raja Shivaji”. While the historical epic is now approaching the ₹100 crore net milestone after its 5th weekend, the latest devotional comedy is rapidly moving towards the ₹50 crore net mark at the box office.
The Pravin Tarde-directed film has received a widespread appreciation from audiences, and its growth over the 2nd weekend clearly shows that. “Deool Band 2” earned ₹13.85 crore during its second weekend — nearly 30% more than its first 3-day business, indicating that the film is set for a long, healthy theatrical run. Total collection so far stands at ₹44.05 crore net.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal's Malayalam thriller “Drishyam 3” remained among the top choices for the second consecutive weekend. The film added ₹13.40 crore during the May 29-31 frame, pushing its total 11-day collection to an impressive ₹89.70 crore net at the domestic box office.
Although the film has already become the second highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2026 behind “Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros” (₹129.42 crore), signs of a gradual slowdown have begun to emerge. This can be gauged from the fact that its second weekend total is even less than the film's first-day collection (₹15 crore). Nevertheless, the film has already emerged as a major success and is expected to comfortably cross the ₹100 crore by the end of its theatrical run in India. The film is even a bigger hit overseas, collecting ₹116.75 crore internationally for a worldwide total of ₹222.60 crore gross.
Suriya's “Karuppu” continues to defy all the expectations with its extraordinary hold in theatres. The film added ₹12.95 crore net on its third weekend, taking its total to ₹163.14 crore net in India. The action entertainer has been winning hearts and attracting audiences to cinemas despite this week's new release, “Blast” opening strongly. The Arjun Sarja starrer martial arts film opened on Thursday and has collected ₹13.95 crore on its 4-day weekend, emerging as the weekend winner during May 29-31 frame. The film seems to be a perfect follow-up and confidence booster for Tamil cinema following the blockbuster success of “Karuppu”.
Among the new releases, Hollywood’s horror thriller “Obsession” opened extremely well in India following its record-breaking global run — the film has accumulated $148 million worldwide against a mere $1 million production budget. Directed by YouTuber Curry Barker and starring Michael Johnston in the lead role, the psychological horror opened in Indian cinemas last Friday with ₹1.50 crore net. Thanks to its extraordinary theatrical run worldwide, the film was carrying a phenomenal buzz in India, and it showed during the weekend, when it registered more than 80% growth on Saturday (₹2.75 crore) and another 16% jump on Sunday (₹3.21 crore). The film has collected ₹7.46 crore on its first weekend and is well-positioned for a good theatrical run at the Indian box office.
Another new release, the Malayalam action thriller “Kattalan,” also registered a solid start and collected ₹7.29 crore net over its four-day weekend.
In stark contrast, Hindi films continued to endure a difficult period at the box office. Jackie Shroff’s new film “The Great Grand Superhero” earned around ₹1.31 crore net on its first weekend, while last week’s “Chand Mera Dil” starring Lakshya and Ananya Panday witnessed a sharp decline. The romantic drama collected ₹4.70 crore during its second frame — above 55% drop from its first weekend — taking its total to ₹23.50 crore net in India.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s “Pati Patni Aur Woh Do,” however, has slowly found its footing at the box office. The comedy drama added ₹4.83 crore net in its third weekend, pushing its total to ₹46.05 crore net. The film is now targeting a ₹55 crore lifetime. While that figure would help improve its overall box-office standing, the film is still likely to finish its theatrical journey below industry expectations.
