Box office Weekend Winners: ‘Cocktail 2’ Leads; ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ Grows Remarkably, ‘Maa Inti Bangaaram’ Opens Strongly

“Cocktail 2,” starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna, has collected ₹46.25 crore net at the box office, emerging as the weekend winner. The Homi Adajania rom-com opened on Friday with ₹13 crore and witnessed a surge over Saturday (₹16 cr) and Sunday (₹17.25 cr) to record one of the biggest opening weekends for a Hindi rom-com.

“Cocktail 2” has established a solid foundation in the first week, but the challenges ahead will now be to sustain the momentum through weekdays. Its limited growth on Sunday is an alarming sign, and one would be hoping it holds well on weekdays. The film requires a genuinely healthy hold from Monday onward, without block bookings seen massively during the weekend to boost collections. The “Cocktail” sequel needs to collect at least ₹100 crore at the domestic box office to be considered a success.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s “Maa Inti Bangaaram” claimed the second spot among this week’s releases, collecting ₹23.10 crore net over the first weekend. The Telugu action comedy has received positive reception from audiences and critics alike, making it the top choice among the South Indian audiences.

The film opened to an impressive ₹5.35 crore on Friday and jumped nearly 45% on Saturday (₹7.65 cr). Collections surged further to ₹10.10 crore on Sunday, reflecting another strong increase and resulting in Samantha’s biggest-ever opening weekend as a solo lead. Given its favorable word of mouth, the film is expected to remain steady during the weekdays and has strong potential to emerge as a commercial success.

Meanwhile, Imtiaz Ali’s “Main Vaapas Aaunga” has mounted an unexpected comeback at the box office following its extremely disappointing first week. The film has displayed strong staying power in its second weekend, with more shows and exceptionally positive word of mouth drawing audiences to theatres in large numbers. It collected ₹1.95 crore on its second Friday and jumped to over 120% the next day, collecting ₹4.35 cr on Saturday. The film, which opened to a mere ₹1.20 crore on the first day, reached ₹5.60 crore on its 10th day, highlighting its growing audience acceptance.

“Main Vaapas Aaunga” earned ₹11.90 crore during the second weekend, which is nearly similar to its entire first-week collection (₹12.12 crore). The total 10-day business now stands at ₹24.02 crore net. Although the overall figures remain far below success benchmarks, the massive surge in audience turnout shows good signs of growth in the coming days, helping the film achieve a somewhat respectable final total.

After surprising the trade with a stronger-than-expected opening week collection of ₹16 crore, Vikram Bhatt’s “Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past” fell flat at the box office in its second weekend. The film collected only ₹1.48 crore during the second weekend, which is nearly 75% less than even its first-day figure (₹2.55 cr), underscoring its rejection among audiences despite its unusual initial theatrical buzz. The total collection of this horror thriller now stands at ₹17.48 crore and is expected to end its lifetime at around ₹20 crore, turning out to be a modest sleeper hit at the box office.

Ram Charan’s Telugu sports action drama “Peddi” has slowed down but is still attracting audiences to theatres. The film recorded another healthy boost in its third weekend, adding ₹5.88 crore more to the tally. With ₹210.89 crore net so far, “Peddi” has already emerged as the second-highest-grossing Telugu film of this year, trailing only Chiranjeevi’s “Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu,” which collected ₹218 crore early this year. Globally, the film has earned ₹301.70 crore gross, including a massive ₹52.85 crore gross from overseas.

From Hollywood, “Obsession” continues its extraordinary theatrical run in India. The psychological horror added ₹5.53 crore in its fourth weekend, pushing its total to ₹76.82 crore net. The film has now become the highest-grossing Hollywood title of the year at the Indian box office, comfortably surpassing the lifetimes of major titles such as “Project Hail Mary” and “Michael”. It’s now targeting the record of the highest-grossing Hollywood horror film in India, currently held by “The Conjuring Last Rites,” which collected ₹83.40 crore net last year.

The new Hollywood release, “Toy Story 5,” has underperformed in India, despite scoring the biggest debut of the year at its domestic box office in North America. The animated feature collected only ₹4.96 crore net at the Indian box office over the weekend, falling short of expectations for a franchise of its scale and popularity. Globally, however, the film has earned a sensational $312 million, including $160 million from North America and $152 million from overseas markets.
