Upward Trend for ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga,’ ‘Obsession’ and ‘Haunted 3D’ Continue Smooth Run at the Box Office

Imtiaz Ali’s “Main Vaapas Aaunga” cannot be written off. The partition drama film is witnessing a remarkable turnaround at the box office following its low opening last Friday.

The Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Raina-starrer heartwarming drama has displayed exceptional weekday momentum, with the film’s Thursday earnings nearly doubling its first-day figure. The AR Rahman musical has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, with many ranking it as among the best Imtiaz Ali films. It’s the audience reception and word of mouth that are now showing their magic, translating into increased footfalls and driving its resurgence at the box office.

Although “Main Vaapas Aaunga” has finished its first-week theatrical run at a modest ₹12.12 crore net, its box office prospects are expected to get better in the coming days. Trade experts are predicting a bigger second weekend than its debut frame, fueled by its rapidly increasing audience appreciation.

Meanwhile, Vikram Bhatt’s “Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past” has collected ₹16 crore net in its first week. The horror thriller made a surprising debut with ₹9.37 crore on its opening weekend and sustained a healthy momentum through the weekdays too. This film has emerged as a fascinating case study for Hindi cinema due to its unexpected theatrical business — it opened better than all the new releases last week despite limited marketing, an underwhelming trailer, and virtually no pre-release buzz, and has been maintaining a strong hold at the box office despite receiving mixed-to-negative audience response.

“Haunted 3D” is now heading for another promising weekend and is likely to emerge as a box office success. That’s good news for the ever-struggling Hindi horror, a genre Bollywood filmmakers have usually stayed away from due to its inconsistent commercial returns. This success could possibly revitalize the interest in the Hindi horror genre.

Last week’s other releases, Kangana Ranaut’s “Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata” and Manoj Bajpayee’s “Governor,” turned out to be nonstarters. Both films are expected to lose the majority of their screens from today, bringing their theatrical runs close to an end. “Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata” collected ₹6.10 crore net, while “Governor” earned ₹4.82 crore in its first week.

On the Hollywood front, “Obsession” had another remarkable week at the Indian box office. The Curry Barker-directed horror collected ₹21.79 crore net in its third week, marking a roughly 30% decline from its second week and continuing its exceptional hold in Indian theatres. With a total of ₹71.29 crore net, “Obsession” has outperformed the lifetime collection of “Michael” and is now setting its sights on overtaking “Project Hail Mary” to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film of this year at the Indian box office.

Among the new Hollywood releases, Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” accumulated ₹8.11 crore net, while the horror film “Backrooms” managed to collect only ₹4.52 crore net in its first week at the Indian box office.

Varun Dhawan’s “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” added ₹10.88 crore net in its second week, which is more than half of the film’s opening weekend collection (₹23.55 crore), underscoring that the film has largely failed to connect with audiences. So far, the romantic comedy has earned ₹46.91 crore net and is expected to end its lifetime run by ₹55 crore net.
