2026 has been a dull year for Tamil cinema with only Suriya’s “Karuppu” and Thalapathy Vijay’s “Jana Nayagan” emerging as certified hits at the box office. While the industry might witness a turnaround with “Mandaadi,” “Vishwanath & Sons,” “Demonte Colony 3” and “Sardar 2,” the big event is the box office battle between two Tamil tentpoles, Rajinikanth’s “Jailer 2” (October 15) and Dhanush-starrer “OM Chapter 1: Udhiram - The Blood Wood” (October 16).

Touted to be one of the biggest clashes of the year, it will witness two superstars fighting for screens during the festive weekend of Navratri and Dussehra. Interestingly, the makers of Dhanush’s film announced the release date first (June 18), followed by “Jailer 2,” which made it official on July 2.

While this box-office competition will be a treat for cinegoers, it may hamper both films’ business, especially “Om.” Sreedhar Pillai, veteran industry tracker, says, “I have my doubts whether both films will release on the same day, because it will be detrimental for ‘Om’ to have a competitor. I think “Jailer 2” will release solo and ‘Om’ will be shifted to Diwali.”

He further reveals that OTT platforms, who bag digital rights with films, decide the theatrical release dates. “The release date is now determined by the digital streaming partners, along with the other people associated with the project. What the digital partners look at is the date after the 28-day (four-week) theatrical run of the film. They look for the days that suit them, where Hindi content doesn’t clash with the Tamil releases. In this case, the final say remains with the digital holders. So, if they have a slot and they are looking at it, they don’t care whether or not the films clash, because theatrical business doesn’t mean much to them.”

Ramesh Bala, industry tracker from Chennai, reveals that the makers of “Om” are in negotiations with Netflix, their streaming partner, over the release date. “Netflix wants to release the film on October 16, because they want to screen it on the platform in four weeks. Right now, officially, the release date hasn’t been changed, so ‘Jailer 2’ and ‘Om’ are clashing at the box office. This clash will also put exhibitors and distributors in a dilemma over the distribution of screens and shows across Tamil Nadu.”
