The upcoming season of “Bridgerton” marks the series’ fifth book-to-screen adaptation and shifts the focus to Francesca Bridgerton, the sixth child of Lady Violet (Ruth Gemmell) and Edmund Bridgerton. It will also feature the show’s first central queer romance.
The Story Behind Season 5
Based on Julia Quinn’s sixth book in the “Bridgerton” series, “When He Was Wicked,” the season follows Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), the cousin of Francesca’s late husband, John Stirling. While the original novel centers on a heterosexual romance between Francesca and Michael Stirling, the Netflix adaptation has gender-swapped the character, reimagining the relationship as a romance between two women.

She toys with the idea of staying single and grows closer to her cousin-in-law Michaela, who returns to London to manage the estate. Their friendship gradually develops into a romantic relationship.

Production and Release Date
Production wrapped on October 27, 2026, with filming taking place primarily in the United Kingdom. The series is now in post-production, and Netflix has confirmed a 2027 release.
What Lies Ahead for the Bridgerton Universe?
While many expected the fifth season to focus on Eloise, the fifth Bridgerton sibling as per their alphabetical order, the makers have instead chosen to tell Francesca’s story. The season is also expected to lay the groundwork for the sixth installment, which will likely follow Eloise’s romance and draw from Quinn’s “To Sir Phillip, With Love.” “Bridgerton” Season 6 was greenlit in May 2025.
Meanwhile, a limited prequel series centered on a young Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, the parents of the Bridgerton siblings, has also been announced.
