The makers of “Ramayana” recently announced that the first part of the epic will release on November 6, coinciding with the festive weekend of Diwali. While there is no big competition for the film in the domestic market, it will battle against the Japanese film “Godzilla Minus Zero” internationally. However, this clash is beyond box office numbers as the two culturally significant movies will compete for premium formats and international audiences in the global diaspora. Interestingly, the Japanese kaiju film is releasing in its home country on November 3 to honor Godzilla Day.

Two Different Worlds

The two films represent the cultural legacies of both countries. “Ramayana” symbolizes Indian core values of righteousness, the triumph of good over evil, and traditional family values. On the other hand, Godzilla is a cultural icon and a powerful symbol of Japan’s post-war phase, its resilience to rise after facing natural disasters.

Fight for IMAX Screens

In India, “Ramayana” will have the upper hand. However, “Godzilla Minus Zero” might take a significant share of the IMAX screens in the international circuits. China will play a crucial role as the country has the maximum laser/digital IMAX screens - around 800. Since “Godzilla Minus One” (2023) didn’t have a China release, it would be interesting to see whether the makers go with the same strategy or try for a wider release.

Tough Battle In North America

The makers of Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi-starrer are targeting the North American market as one of their key areas for a good number of screens and shows with the help of Sony Pictures Entertainment (the film’s international distributor). But anticipation for “Godzilla Minus Zero” is high since its previous installment grossed approximately $57 million at the North American box office and emerged as the highest-grossing Japanese-language live-action film in the region’s history. It outperformed the box office numbers of its home country due to historic word of mouth.

National Films Aspiring To Be Global Tentpole Movies

The makers are going all out to make “Ramayana” a global visual spectacle. By collaborating with Sony Pictures Entertainment, they are strategizing to tap maximum international key markets. On the flip side, “Godzilla Minus Zero” already has the goodwill of its previous part, which will ensure a good opening in the primary circuits.
