Nitesh Tiwari’s “Ramayana: Part One” has been released worldwide and is the most expensive project to come out of Indian cinema. Ravie Dubey, who plays Lord Lakshman, is getting good reviews for his excellent performance. He firmly believes that glorious tales from Indian mythology deserve ambitious retelling on the big screen.

He tells Variety India, “Absolutely. In fact, I believe India is already taking that leap of faith. The Indian story is global now. We possess thousands of years of extraordinary heritage, mythology, philosophy and characters whose ideas are universal. The world deserves to experience them and learn from them at the scale and with the cinematic ambition they deserve.”

He feels that “Ramayana” will set a new benchmark for Indian filmmaking in terms of making films that cater to the global audience. Dubey opines, “What Namit (Malhotra) Sir and Nitesh Sir are attempting with ‘Ramayana,’ I believe, goes beyond one film. It has the potential to catalyse a cinematic movement in an unprecedented way, one in which Indian stories are told unapologetically from India, but mounted for the entire world.”

The actor feels one needs to be rooted in one’s tradition to achieve global success. Dubey adds, “We shouldn’t have to dilute our Indianness to become global. We need more event films. We need scale, ambition and courage. But most importantly, we need sincerity towards the stories we are telling. India has stories that can leave the world in awe. Now is the time to tell them that way.”

“Ramayana” also stars Yash as Ravan, Sai Pallavi as Maa Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Lara Dutta Bhupathi as Kaikeyi and a host of other actors. A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer have scored the music.
