Who Is Doctor Doom? Robert Downey Jr’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Villain and His History With Reed Richards Explained
Robert Downey Jr is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not as the superhero audiences associate him with. Seven years after Tony Stark sacrificed himself in “Avengers: Endgame”, the actor is set to play Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, in “Avengers: Doomsday”. The character is one of Marvel Comics’ most enduring antagonists, with a history that stretches back more than six decades.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, “Avengers: Doomsday” will bring together characters from different corners of the Marvel universe. The film is scheduled to release in Indian theatres on December 17, 2026, a day before its US release, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Here is what to know about Doctor Doom before his MCU debut.
When Did Doctor Doom First Appear?
Doctor Doom made his comic-book debut in “Fantastic Four” #5, published in July 1962. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character was introduced as Victor von Doom, a brilliant scientist whose ambition and arrogance eventually turn him into one of the Fantastic Four’s greatest enemies.
Doom is also the ruler of Latveria, a fictional European nation, and is known for his metal armour, distinctive mask and mastery of both science and sorcery. Unlike many villains driven purely by destruction, Doom sees himself as a leader capable of imposing order on the world, even if that means ruling it through fear and control.

Why Does Doctor Doom Hate Reed Richards?
Doctor Doom’s rivalry with Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, goes back to their college days. Both are exceptionally gifted scientists, but their intellectual competition takes a darker turn when one of Victor’s experiments goes wrong. Reed had warned him about a flaw in his calculations, but Doom refused to accept the criticism. The accident leaves Victor disfigured and fuels his resentment towards Reed.
Their relationship is more complicated than a straightforward battle between hero and villain. Doom considers himself Reed’s intellectual equal, if not his superior, and their rivalry is shaped by pride, jealousy and an inability to accept defeat.
Pedro Pascal, who plays Reed Richards, has offered a glimpse into how he views the dynamic. “Intellectuals understand that we’re all responsible for ourselves,” Pascal said while discussing Reed’s attitude towards Doom. The film has kept the specifics of their confrontation under wraps.
What Are Doctor Doom’s Powers?
Doctor Doom’s greatest advantage is that he is not dependent on a single superpower. He is a scientific genius, an accomplished inventor and a formidable practitioner of magic. His advanced armour enhances his physical strength, protects him from attacks and gives him access to an arsenal of technological weapons.
His knowledge of the mystic arts makes him particularly dangerous, allowing him to use spells and supernatural abilities alongside his technological inventions. Add to that his political power as the ruler of Latveria and his strategic intelligence, and Doom becomes a threat that cannot be measured by physical strength alone.
How Did Robert Downey Jr Get Cast As Doctor Doom?
Downey’s casting was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, when he appeared on stage alongside the Russo brothers and revealed himself as Doctor Doom. The announcement marked an unexpected return for an actor whose Tony Stark had been central to the MCU for more than a decade.
Joe Russo later revealed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had first suggested bringing Downey back as Doom. The actor had also tried to convince the Russo brothers to return to the “Avengers” franchise, although they initially resisted because they did not have a story they wanted to tell. That changed when screenwriter Stephen McFeely pitched an idea that persuaded them to take on “Avengers: Doomsday”.
For Downey, the challenge is an unusual one. He is returning to a franchise where his previous character's sacrifice remains one of its defining moments, only to take on a villain whose comic-book history is deeply intertwined with the Fantastic Four. Whether the film draws a connection between Doom and Stark, or treats them as entirely separate characters, remains to be seen.
