Samuel L. Jackson Confirms Nick Fury Will Return In ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’; Won’t Appear In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
By Sakshi Navare,
Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not in “Avengers: Doomsday”. The actor has confirmed that his next Marvel appearance will be in the film following “Doomsday”, which is “Avengers: Secret Wars” on Marvel Studios’ current release calendar.
Jackson made the revelation while speaking to The Direct on the red carpet for his upcoming film “The Beast”. Asked about his return as Nick Fury, the actor said, “Next movie… [The] movie after this one.”
When asked if he could reveal anything about that next appearance, Jackson admitted that he has been given virtually no information about the film. “I have no idea. [Marvel] hasn’t told me anything, other than, ‘You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next,’” he said.

While Jackson did not explicitly name “Avengers: Secret Wars” during the exchange, the reference is clear given Marvel’s announced theatrical schedule. “Avengers: Doomsday” is set for December 18, 2026, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” on December 17, 2027. His comments therefore confirm that Nick Fury will skip the former and return in the latter.
The confirmation also settles one of the bigger questions surrounding the upcoming “Avengers” films. Jackson was absent from the official “Doomsday” cast announcement, despite Fury’s importance to the MCU since the franchise began. He first appeared as the character in the post-credits scene of “Iron Man” in 2008, where Fury approached Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative.
Fury subsequently became one of the connective figures across the MCU, appearing in films including “Iron Man 2”, “The Avengers”, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: Endgame”. Jackson also headlined the Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” in 2023 and most recently appeared as Fury in “The Marvels”.
His absence from “Doomsday” is notable given the scale of the ensemble. The film brings together returning MCU stars including Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh and Pedro Pascal, alongside several actors from the “X-Men” franchise and the “Fantastic Four” films. Robert Downey Jr. is also returning to the MCU, this time as the villain Victor von Doom.
“Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow “Doomsday” as the second chapter of the two-film Avengers event being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Beyond Jackson’s confirmation, Marvel has kept much of the film under wraps, with the actor himself indicating that even he does not know what Fury’s role will entail.
For now, that leaves Fury’s next chapter deliberately open. Marvel has apparently given Jackson only one piece of information: he will not be in “Doomsday”, but he will be in the next one.
