Box Office Weekend Winners: ‘Raja Shivaji,’ ‘Bhooth Bangla,’ ‘Michael,’ ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Lead The Way

Riteish Deshmukh's “Raja Shivaji” retained the No. 1 position at the Indian box office despite three new releases — “Mortal Kombat II”, “Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart” and “Daadi Ki Shaadi”.

The Riteish Deshmukh-led historical bilingual witnessed a marginal drop on Friday but bounced back on Saturday and Sunday for a second-weekend haul of ₹15.08 crore net. The film has consistently performed in the Maharashtra region (₹46.54 crore in Marathi alone), and the absence of any major competing release further boosted its collections.

With ₹66.40 crore net accumulated so far, “Raja Shivaji” has already emerged as the third-highest Marathi grosser of all time and the biggest one for Riteish, surpassing his previous biggie, “Ved”. The film is on track to emerge as the biggest-ever Marathi film, challenging the lifetimes of “Baipan Bhaari Deva” (₹76.28 cr) and “Sairat” (₹88.13 cr).

Bhooth-capture continues

The lack of major competition also helped Akshay Kumar's “Bhooth Bangla”  maintain steady momentum at the box office as the film added ₹8.29 crore during its fourth weekend. The Priyadarshan horror-comedy has turned out to be a major commercial success for Akshay, marking a strong comeback for him at the box office. With ₹152.10 crore net in 24 days (including paid previews), the film currently stands as Akshay's seventh highest grosser. Trade estimates suggest the film is likely to conclude its theatrical run in the ₹165–170 crore net range domestically, while its worldwide gross has already reached ₹241 crore.

Hollywood on a high

Two Hollywood films made it to the top 5 this weekend. Third place went to “Michael” which continues attracting audiences to theatres even in its third weekend, adding ₹7.70 crore for its India total to ₹50.34 crore net. With $240.4 million, the Michael Jackson biopic has outpaced the domestic gross of 2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” ($216 million) to become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time in North America. The film is now chasing its worldwide box office record ($911 million) to register its name in history.

The new release, “Mortal Kombat II” was the No. 5 film at the Indian box office this weekend. The video game adaptation collected ₹5.40 crore net in India, while it launched to $40 million at its domestic box office in North America. Last week's “The Devil Wears Prada 2” also added 4.99 crore net on its second weekend, continuing what has been an average theatrical run so far. The comedy drama's total 10-day collection now stands at ₹23.12 crore net.

Box Office Weekend Winners (May 8-10, 2026)Local fortunes

Among the new releases, “Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart” emerged as the clear weekend winner. Although the film opened to a modest ₹42 lakhs on Thursday, it witnessed a remarkable surge on Friday (₹1.15 cr), followed by another significant jump on Saturday (₹2.25 cr) and Sunday (₹3.50 cr), resulting in a four-day weekend total of ₹7.32 crore net. In contrast, Kapil Sharma's comedy drama “Daadi Ki Shaadi” opened to a disastrous response, managing to collect only ₹3.45 crore over the weekend.

South’s down

Interestingly, no South Indian film featured in the top 5 this weekend — the first time since we started tracking weekend winners. Several South India movies that started off well last weekend failed to sustain their box office mojo. Dhanush's “Kara” added just ₹3.27 crore net, taking its total to ₹33.53 crore net in 11 days. Malayalam biggie “Patriot” fell flat on the second weekend and is heading towards becoming one of the biggest box office flops in Malayalam cinema. Its sharp rejection from audiences can be gauged from the fact that after opening with ₹10 crore on its first day, the film managed only ₹2.43 crore during its entire second weekend. Among the latest South Indian releases, Malayalam film “Dridam” collected ₹2.05 crore net, while Telugu comedy “Godari Gattupaina” earned ₹2.45 crore net over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar's “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” is still breathing fire in theatres, adding ₹2.42 crore net in its eighth weekend. The total domestic collection of this spy actioner now stands at approx. ₹1095 crore, with the worldwide total now reaching ₹1800 crore gross.
