Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions To Kickstart A New Era in Distribution With ‘Ramayana’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Dharma Productions has bankrolled iconic box office films like “Agneepath,” “Gumrah,” “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” “Kal Ho Naa Ho,” “My Name Is Khan,” “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,” “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” and many more since its inception.

While the studio has a mix of big-ticket and content-driven projects across this year and 2027, including Ayushmann Khurrana’s “Udta Teer,” Kartik Aaryan’s “Naagzilla” and Tiger Shroff-starrer “Lag Jaa Gale,” the production house is also aggressively enhancing its portfolio in the distribution arm. The company is hunting for strong regional and pan-India content to scale up and give a wide theatrical distribution across the globe under its banner.

The banner already has a reputation for distributing biggies like the “Baahubali Franchise” and “Devara: Part I,” along with regional films like “The Ghazi Attack,” “Kaantha,” “Chatha Pacha: The Ring of Rowdies,” and “Jindagi Once More.” In fact, it has also handled the worldwide distribution of Shehnaaz Gill’s Punjabi film “Ikk Kudi.”

Recently, Dharma hit the jackpot by bagging the exclusive India distribution rights of Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi’s epic Diwali release “Ramayana: Part I” for a staggering cost of ₹350 crore. This deal can turn out to be one of the most profitable decisions for the firm, and might make them one of the leading distributors in the country.

Meanwhile, the studio is distributing this week's release, the Tamil biographical drama “GDN.” The R Madhavan-starrer will be distributed in Karnataka and North Indian markets by the production house.

Apart from Dharma, several production banners like YRF, Zee Studios, Pen Studios, Reliance Entertainment, and others have also been handling the distribution model for quite some time.
