‘Ramayana’: Dharma Productions to Distribute the Ranbir Kapoor-Starrer in India (EXCLUSIVE)

“Ramayana,” headlined by Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and  Yash, has been making headlines ever since it was announced. While the first installment, slated for a Diwali release, will be distributed overseas by Warner Bros. Pictures, Variety India has exclusively learned that Dharma Productions has secured the Indian distribution rights.

Namit Malhotra, the producer of the ambitious mythological epic, showcased an edited 30-minute footage of the film to several studios as part of the distribution process. The stunning visuals reportedly impressed Dharma Productions, paving the way for discussions and negotiations.
 

According to sources, the negotiations began at a staggering ₹500 crore before the deal was eventually finalized at ₹250 crore. With Dharma Productions on board, the studio is expected to leave no stone unturned in ensuring the film gets the widest possible release across India.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, best known for “Dangal” and “Chhichhore,” “Ramayana” will be released in two parts. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.

The pan-India ensemble cast also includes Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Arun Govil as King Dashrath, Indira Krishnan as Queen Kaushalya, Sheeba Chadha as Manthara, Adinath Kothare as Bharat, and Kunal Kapoor as Lord Indra, among others.

Bankrolled by Namit Malhotra, CEO of DNEG and Founder of Prime Focus, the music of “Ramayana” is composed by maestros Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman.
