‘House of The Dragon’: Every Key Player in Season 3 for The Blacks and The Greens
Quiet in the realm, it’s time for “House of the Dragon” Season 3. The “Game of Thrones” prequel series by Ryan Condal arrives with its third instalment, loaded with some of the bloodiest battles yet in the Targaryen civil war known in “A Song of Ice and Fire” as the Dance of the Dragons.
The Two Targaryen Camps
The Blacks are loyal to Queen Rhaenyra, who resides and convenes her war council in the castle at the island of Dragonstone. And the Greens are loyal to the Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower and King Aegon II Targaryen, who sits on the Iron Throne at King’s Landing.
Going into “House of the Dragon” Season 3, here are the key players in the Dance of the Dragons, their loyalties and their dragons.
The Blacks
Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen
At the end of Season 2, Rhaenyra is the more powerful player. She rides the dragon Syrax. And as per her deal with Alicent Hightower, she plans to take over King’s Landing.
Prince Daemon Targaryen
After an illuminating time spent at Harrenhal with Alys Rivers, who showed him visions of the Song of Ice and Fire, Prince Daemon Targaryen is now fully loyal and ready to fight for his wife, Queen Rhaenyra. His dragon is Caraxes.
Prince Jacaerys Velaryon
The eldest son and heir of Queen Rhaenyra is desperate to fly into battle on his dragon Vermax and prove himself. And he is an astute strategist, too, who is not always on board with his mother’s plans. He is bound to react badly when Rhaenyra reveals Alicent’s visit to him.
Lord Corlys Velaryon
After losing his wife, Princess Rhaenys, in the Battle of Rook’s Rest, Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake, holds steady the naval blockade that has crippled King’s Landing.
Lady Baela Targaryen
Prince Daemon’s daughter, Baela, is betrothed to Prince Jacaerys and rides the dragon Moondancer.
Lady Rhaena Targaryen
Baela’s younger sister, Rhaena, was sent to The Vale to watch over Rhaenyra’s younger sons, Aegon and Viserys. But she is hellbent on claiming the wildest dragon in the Seven Kingdoms, Sheepstealer.
Alyn of Hull
The bastard son of Lord Corlys Velaryon didn’t claim a dragon like his brother, Addam, but he is a shipwright and second-in-command of the Sea Snake’s fleet.
Lady Mysaria
Also known as The White Worm, this former paramour of Prince Daemon, who helped him orchestrate revenge for Prince Lucerys’ death, is a master of espionage and secrets and is now an advisor to Queen Rhaenyra.
The Dragonseeds
The Dragonseeds are Targaryen and Velaryon bastards who were invited to claim riderless dragons at Dragonstone and swell the ranks of the Blacks. These include Addam of Hull, who claimed Laenor Velaryon’s dragon, Seasmoke; Hugh Hammer, who claimed Vermithor; and Ulf the White, who rides Silverwing.
The Blacks' Alliances
Thanks to the diplomatic efforts of Rhaenyra’s house, the Blacks have secured major alliances with other houses in the North and the Riverlands. Characters such as Oscar Tully, Lady Sabitha Frey, Lord Roderick Dustin (Roddy the Ruin) and Torrhen Manderly will play a major role this season.

The Greens
Alicent Hightower
The once-powerful Dowager Queen feels helpless now that her son, the King, has been injured, her grandson murdered, and her second son, Prince Aemond, has displayed a maniacal penchant for bloody war. She went to Dragonstone to broker a deal with Queen Rhaenyra: King’s Landing in exchange for sparing the lives of her daughter, Queen Helaena and granddaughter, Princess Jaehaera.
King Aegon II Targaryen
The step-brother of Queen Rhaenyra, King Aegon II, seemed to have lost all hope after his injury in the Battle at Rook's Rest. However, with the help of the cunning Lord Larys Strong, he might just have another chance. Aegon’s injured dragon, Sunfyre, remains at Rook’s Rest.
Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen
Rider of Vhagar, the deadliest and biggest dragon of all, Aemond One-Eye believes he is better suited to rule than his brother. Aemond dare not take on Rhaenyra with all her extra dragon riders, but he is to join Criston Cole in the Riverlands to take over Harrenhal from Daemon Targaryen.
Queen Helaena Targaryen
Helaena, like some of her Targaryen ancestors, has prophetic dreams, but no one heeds her counsel, not even Aemond, who cares for her. Helaena's son with King Aegon, Jaehaerys, was murdered in a revenge plot by Daemon Targaryen. She is a dragonrider, but her dragon, Dreamfyre, has not yet been seen in the series.
Ser Criston Cole
While he awaits Aemond and Vhagar in the Riverlands, so they can claim Harrenhal, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and the Hand of the King seems to be having a crisis of faith, having failed to uphold most of his Kingsguard vows.
Ser Gwayne Hightower
Son of Otto Hightower, brother to Alicent and uncle to King Aegon II, Ser Gwayne is a knight with honor. He is in the Riverlands with Cristin Cole.
Lord Larys Strong
Lord Larys Strong may be a cripple, but he has shrewdly played the game to ensure he holds the power over kings and queens. After manipulating Alicent, his latest project is the recuperating King Aegon II, whom he sneaks out of the Red Keep.
Ser Otto Hightower
At the end of Season 2, the dismissed former Hand of the King was surprisingly rotting in a jail cell. His incarcerator and his fate will be revealed in Season 3.
Lord Ormund Hightower
Ser Otto’s rather capable nephew, Lord Ormund Hightower, will be joining the Green ranks this season and leading its southern armies along with the might of the Reach.
Prince Daeron Targaryen
The youngest son of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys I was squiring in Oldtown under his uncle, Lord Ormund’s watch, and will now join his family in battle. He rides Tessarion, a blue dragon.
Ser Tyland Lannister
As Master of Ships on King Aegon II’s Small Council, Ser Tyland managed to go to Tyrosh and secure the support of the Triarchy for the Greens by impressing its leader in a mud-wrestling match. He has a twin brother, Lord Jason Lannister.
Admiral Sharako Lohar of The Triarchy
Admiral Sharako Lohar leads the Triarchy, an alliance of three free cities in Essos: Lys, Tyrosh and Myr. Lohar is a loose cannon who might have other motives in helping the Greens break the blockade, particularly to get even with the Sea Snake.
The Wildcard
Alys Rivers, aka the witch of Harrenhal, is a tricky character whose loyalty is under debate. Until now, she has helped the Blacks, showing Daemon Targaryen a glimpse into the Song of Ice and Fire through a weirwood, which returned him as a more dedicated soldier by Rhaenyra’s side. But her true motives are unclear.
