‘Aegon’s Conquest’: ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Film Sets Up the Franchise’s Most Demanded Origin Story

The world of “Game of Thrones” is returning to one of its most defining chapters. With the official title for the upcoming prequel film now confirmed as “Aegon’s Conquest,” the franchise is finally moving toward a story that fans have been asking for since the original show ended.

Set centuries before the events of “Game of Thrones,” the film will mostly explore the rise of Aegon I Targaryen, the ruler who brought together the Seven Kingdoms under one crown. While House of the Dragon focused on the internal conflicts within the Targaryen family, this film shifts the lens to the moment they first arrived, conquered and established control over Westeros.

The story offers scale in a way few arcs in the franchise can. Aegon’s campaign was not a single war but a series of calculated moves across regions that were then ruled by independent kings. Alongside his sisters Visenya Targaryen and Rhaenys Targaryen, he built alliances, crushed resistance and reshaped the political map of the continent. Each kingdom had its own ruler, its own culture and its own response to the invasion, which gives the film multiple layers of conflict and perspective.

Key events from the lore are expected to form the backbone of the narrative. The burning of Harrenhal and the fall of Harren Hoare remain among the most dramatic turning points. The submission of the North and the uneasy acceptance by other regions can add emotional and political weight. These moments are not just about spectacle but about how power is established and how fear and loyalty are negotiated.

Dragons will play a central role, particularly Balerion, often referred to as the Black Dread, along with the dragons ridden by Visenya and Rhaenys. However, the film has the opportunity to go beyond visual scale and focus on the personalities driving the conquest. Aegon has often been portrayed as a composed and strategic figure, while Visenya is seen as more severe and commanding, and Rhaenys as more diplomatic. Their dynamic alone offers enough material for character-driven storytelling within a large canvas.

There is also room to explore the cost of conquest. The original series often dealt with the aftermath of power struggles, but this story can focus on the moment of creation. It can examine what it takes to build a kingdom from scratch and what is lost in the process.

For HBO, “Aegon’s Conquest” is a significant move. Expanding the franchise into a film allows for a different scale of storytelling while revisiting one of its most important historical events. It also connects directly to the larger timeline that audiences already know, giving context to the world seen in both “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon.”

With a story that combines large-scale battles, political strategy and character dynamics, “Aegon’s Conquest” stands as one of the most anticipated expansions of the franchise. If executed well, it has the potential to deliver both spectacle and depth while finally bringing one of Westeros’ most talked-about chapters to screen.

“Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” will be written by Beau Willimon, who was previously the showrunner of Netflix’s “House of Cards” and a writer on Disney+’s hit “Star Wars” show “Andor.” The “Game of Thrones” world continues this summer with Season 3 of “House of the Dragon,” plus HBO ordered a second season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”
