Tom Holland starrer “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has just broken a brand new record, one that would make Tony Stark super proud of his “kid,” Peter Parker. The newest “Spider-Man” film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, made history by breaking box office records previously held by another Marvel film, “Avengers: Endgame.” And the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony, have made a sweet gesture to acknowledge this achievement.

The “Avengers: Endgame” directors, who have returned as directors on “Avengers: Doomsday” as well, shared a celebratory post on social media, acknowledging the web-slinging superhero’s takeover of the mantle of the biggest opening weekend collection of all time domestically. Its $360 million collection beats “Avengers: Endgame”’s $357 million collection from 2019.

The Russo Brothers congratulated the cast and crew of “Brand New Day” by sharing artwork from creator Boss Logic, which shows Spider-Man wearing the Infinity Stones as rings. They called the event a “passing of the gauntlet”, referring to the Infinity Gauntlet sported by Thanos and eventually Iron Man in “Endgame.”

The caption said, “Huge congratulations to Destin, Tom, Zendaya, Jacob, Jon, Mark, Sadie, Florence, Michael, Marisa, producers Kevin, Amy, Avi, and Rachel, and the entire Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast and crew on making domestic box office opening weekend history. The gauntlet has been passed…”

This fun passing of the baton has been happening in Hollywood for quite some time. As soon as a film breaks the top box office record, the makers of the film that previously held it have shared an acknowledgment of this change of guard and congratulated the cast and crew of the new record holder. Earlier, filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas would take out full-page ads in industry magazines and newspapers, with artwork that placed characters from “Star Wars,” “E.T.” and ‘Titanic” in the other’s fictional world.

In 2019, James Cameron congratulated Marvel Studios after “Avengers: Endgame” garnered $2.79 billion at the box office, surpassing the numbers of “Avatar.” Interestingly, when Avatar re-released and surpassed “Endgame” records, Marvel Studios, too, posted artwork that acknowledged this. The Russo Brothers also shared a separate artwork, “passing the gauntlet.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken “Avengers: Endgame” opening weekend collection records both domestically and in India, where it collected Rs. 309 crore and registered the biggest opening day and opening weekend ever for a Hollywood film.
