Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone: These Hindi Actresses Made Their Debut Down South

The crossover between South Indian cinema (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam) and the Hindi industry has been among the biggest talking points among cinegoers. With recent films blurring the lines of regional cinemas by working across industries and languages, the biggest actresses ruling the Hindi film industry started their careers with South Indian films. In fact, legendary actresses like Rekha, Hema Malini, Vyjayanthimala, Sridevi and Jaya Prada also made their first on-screen appearances with South Indian films.

As Hindi films continue to dominate the popularity index and box office numbers, here’s a look at actresses who began their acting career with South Indian films before entering the Hindi market.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: 1997 (Tamil)

Iruvar

The ethereal beauty known for delivering memorable performances in “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,” “Devdas,” “Guzaarish” and “Jodhaa Akbar,” arrived for the first time on the big screen with Mani Ratnam’s “Iruvar” opposite Mohanlal in 1997.

Priyanka Chopra: 2002 (Tamil)

The ‘Desi Girl,’ who is now a global icon, made her big-screen debut with the Tamil film “Thamizhan” opposite Thalapathy Vijay in 2002. She later went on to feature in successful Hindi films like “Don,” “Agneepath” and “Fashion,” among others.

Deepika Padukone: 2002 (Kannada)

Before ruling the Hindi film industry with “Om Shanti Om,” “Padmaavat,” “Piku” and “Chennai Express,” DP made her movie debut with the Kannada romantic drama “Aishwarya” opposite Upendra in 2002.

Taapsee Pannu: 2010  (Telugu)

The intense performer, who featured in films like “Thappad,” “Pink” and “Badla,” entered the entertainment industry with “Jhummandi Naadam” opposite Manoj Manchu.

Yami Gautam: 2009 (Kannada)

The powerhouse performer, who delivered impeccable performances in “Haq,” “Article 370,” and “Uri: The Surgical Strike,” made her big-screen debut in 2009’s “Ullasa Utsaha” costarring Ganesh.  

Kriti Sanon: 2014 (Telugu)

Kriti Sanon, one of the busiest Hindi actresses, made her first screen appearance in “1: Nenokkadine” opposite Mahesh Babu. While the film was a commercial failure, it gained ‘cult’ status among fans over the years.

Disha Patani: 2015 (Telugu)

Before impressing Hindi audiences with her girl-next-door portrayal in “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,” Disha showed her charismatic screen presence in 2015’s Telugu flick, “Loafer” opposite Varun Tej.

Rakul Preet Singh: 2009 (Kannada)

Rakul Preet is one of the rare actresses who has perfectly balanced between Hindi and South Indian cinemas. She started her career with the 2009 Gururaj-starrer “Gilli.”

Pooja Hegde: 2012 (Tamil)

Before entering the Hindi film industry, Pooja had already made her Tamil and Telugu debut with films like “Mugamoodi” and followed it up with “Oka Laila Kosam” and “Mukunda” in 2014.
