Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun to Karthi: South Actors Yet to Enter Bollywood

Over the past decade, South Indian and Bollywood actors have worked across industries to create pan-India films. While stars from Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada have debuted in Hindi—like Yash (“Ramayana”), Fahadh Faasil (“The Idiot Of Istanbul”) and Rishab Shetty (“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj”)—some top Southern actors are yet to join Bollywood.

There was a time when top South stars, including Rajnikant and Kamal Haasan attempted to achieve stardom in Hindi films. It was the biggest film industry with the largest viewership. Even Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna did a few Hindi films before giving up trying to woo the North. Ram Charan was the last of the top stars from the South to act in a Hindi film with the recent addition being Jr NTR with "War 2." Now the tables have turned. South stars don't see Bollywood as aspirational. South actors are now pan-India stars and with films being dubbed, they have a fan following across the country. That's why some of the biggest names have continued to stay away from Hindi films.

Mahesh Babu

Mahesh Babu, known as ‘The Prince of Tollywood,’ has delivered multiple Telugu blockbusters. While promoting “Major” with Adivi Sesh, he remarked about Bollywood offers, "I may sound arrogant. I did get a lot of offers in Hindi. But I think they can't afford me. I don't want to waste my time.” He is now busy with SS Rajamouli’s “Varanasi.”

Allu Arjun

The ‘Stylish Star’ of the Telugu industry became a household name after the pan-India success of the “Pushpa” franchise. While the actor enjoys a humongous fanbase in the Hindi market, he is yet to make his Bollywood debut. His upcoming movies include “Raaka,” “AA23” with Lokesh Kanagaraj, and projects with Trivikram Srinivas, Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Basil Joseph.

Pawan Kalyan

The actor and politician, who is called ‘The Power Star,” is one of the biggest names in Tollywood. While his brother Chiranjeevi and nephew Ram Charan have appeared in Hindi films, he is yet to make his Bollywood debut.

Vijay

The Tamil star and politician known by the title ‘Thalapathy’ has delivered several memorable films like “Theri,” “Mersal,” “Thuppakki” and “Master,” but has never done a Bollywood film. The actor is currently in the news for his film “Jana Nayagan,” which is said to be his final venture before he becomes a full-time politician.

Karthi

Karthi, known for his performances in films like “Kaithi,” “Sardar” and “Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru,” has not acted directly in a straight Bollywood (Hindi) film. He is currently awaiting the release of “Sardar 2.”

Rakshith Shetty

The Kannada actor and filmmaker, who garnered popularity with films like “Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu,” “Kirik Party,” “Avane Srimannarayana,” “777 Charlie” and “Sapta Saagaradaache Ello,” has not hinted at any plan to enter the Hindi market with a Bollywood movie.
