Will Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Cocktail 2’ Have A Double-Digit Opening At The Box Office?

Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer “Cocktail 2” is gearing up for one of the biggest openings for a rom-com film at the box office. According to the analytics platform RecoBee, the romantic comedy is set to open with around ₹9.5-₹10 crore net this Friday.

The film will also mark one of Shahid Kapoor’s biggest openings. For comparison, his previous three films — “O’ Romeo”, “Deva” and “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya” had collected ₹8.50 crore, ₹5.50 crore and ₹6.70 crore, respectively on their first day.

A double-figure opening will bring much-needed cheers to the Hindi film industry, as it’s been eight weeks since a Bollywood release recorded a 10 crore opening at the box office. The film’s advance booking commenced earlier this week and has so far sold tickets worth ₹2.50 crore, with the pace of bookings showing an accelerated growth as the release date approaches.

The Homi Adajania-directed and Dinesh Vijan-produced rom-com has generated decent buzz among its target audiences, and its healthy advance-booking performance, particularly across major national multiplex chains, reflects just that. The sequel factor also seems to be driving the pre-release buzz.

The trade projections indicate that “Cocktail 2” will comfortably outperform the first-day collections of the recent romantic comedies such as “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai”, “Pati Patni Aur Woh Do,” “Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri” and “Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.”

However, the real comparison for “Cocktail 2” will be its predecessor, “Cocktail” (2012). The Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty-starrer original collected ₹10.95 crore on its opening day and eventually went on to earn ₹71.24 crore in India and over ₹120 crore worldwide. While the sequel is set to open in a similar range, whether it replicates the original’s commercial success will ultimately depend on its long-term theatrical performance. The film will need to earn at least ₹100 crore even to be considered average at the box office due to its high production cost.

Shahid’s biggest grosser in the romantic comedy genre remains his 2024 rom-com, “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,” which went on to earn over ₹85 crore net at the Indian box office and close to ₹140 crore worldwide. Reuniting under the Maddock Films banner, Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon will be hoping to recreate that success again with “Cocktail 2.”
