TXT’s ‘7TH YEAR: A Moment of Stillness in the Thorns’ Is a Feast for Pop and Synth Music Lovers: Album Review

TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) has unveiled its 8th mini album, “7TH YEAR: A Moment of Stillness in the Thorns,” along with a music video for the lead single, “Stick With You.”  This album is a highly anticipated one as the boy band enters its seventh year after renewing their contract with BIGHIT MUSIC. The album, “7TH YEAR: A Moment of Stillness in the Thorns,” is supposed to be one of their most self-reflective works to date. The band members, Soobin, Taehyun, Beomgyu, Huening Kai and Yeonjun have tried to express their anxiety and fears musically.

The album has six tracks: "Bed of Thorns," the lead single "Stick With You," "Take Me to Nirvana (feat. Vinida Weng)," "So What," "21st Century Romance" and "Dream of Mine." They have released a music video for the lead single, “Stick With You,” which features actress Jeon Jeong-Su. The song, which is in the electro pop and techno punk genre, features all the boys in love with the same woman and they cannot let go of the heartbreak associated with unrequited love. The music video is beautifully filmed and the boys have given pitch-perfect expressions. It is different from tracks released by K-Pop boy bands of late in terms of sound. The song’s chorus is addictive. The music producers are Slow Rabbit (real name: Kwon Dohyeong) and Jondren Hwang.

“21st Century Romance” is another track that leaves an impression. The R&B and alternative R&B song is produced by Slow Rabbit, Maiz and Elof Loelv. Band member Huening Kai has also played a big role in composing it. The use of synth in the song is seamless.

The absolute bop of the album is “So What.” It combines synth pop and pop rap. It is produced by Elkan, Kavin Smith, Maiz and PXPILLON. Beomguy, Huening Kai and Yeonjun are the stars of the song.

“Bed Of Thorns” is a song that will take time to grow on listeners. It is an electronic track with alternative pop/synth sounds. It is produced by Slow Rabbit and ‘Hitman’ Bang (Bang Si-Hyuk). In terms of lyrics, it is the strongest track of the album.

TXT has collaborated with Chinese singer Vinida Weng for the track, “Track Me to Nirvana.” The song has house-influenced music with heavy electronic sounds. It is rendered like a nursery rhyme where Beomguy and Taehyun’s voices are superlative. In terms of lyrics, it pales in front of the other songs in the album.

Canadian music producer and songwriter Dave Hamelin is behind the track “Dream of Mine,” which is an alternative pop number. It has heavy use of synth with strong beats, creating an upbeat mood.

For an album with six songs, the album, “7TH YEAR: A Moment of Stillness in the Thorns,” has three solid B-sides, which is very good. The album diverts from signature modern K-Pop to create songs that stand out sonically. There is a sense of connection in all the songs, and that should appeal to TXT fans.
