A24 is taking one of its most ambitious bets yet to the international film market with “Elden Ring”, a live-action adaptation of the hit fantasy video game that is reportedly carrying a budget of $175 million to $200 million. Even before its theatrical release, the film has made history in the distribution business, with Amazon MGM Studios securing a substantial package of international streaming rights ahead of its presentation at the American Film Market (AFM) in Los Angeles.
According to Deadline, the deal removes a significant portion of the film’s international rights from the pool available to prospective buyers. The agreement is understood to be worth tens of millions of dollars, although the financial terms have not been officially disclosed. A24 is still taking the project to AFM, where buyers will have the opportunity to negotiate for the remaining rights in their respective territories.
The reported budget makes “Elden Ring” the biggest standalone film ever offered at a film or television rights market, according to Deadline. The distinction is significant for A24, which has built its reputation on filmmaker-driven cinema but is now backing a production on the scale of a major studio fantasy franchise.

What does Amazon MGM’s deal actually mean?
Amazon MGM Studios has acquired international pay-one streaming rights to the film in a deal covering a substantial number of territories. Pay-one refers to the first subscription video-on-demand window after a film’s theatrical and subsequent home-entertainment release windows, depending on the distribution arrangements in each market.
The agreement does not mean Amazon has acquired worldwide theatrical distribution rights. Instead, it gives the studio access to the film for a designated streaming window across the international territories covered by the deal. The specific markets included have not been publicly identified.
For A24, securing a streaming partner before the film reaches AFM could help reduce the commercial risk associated with a production of this scale. The studio is continuing to explore distribution arrangements for the remaining territories, giving international buyers an opportunity to acquire rights to a project that is already attracting attention because of its budget, director and source material.
Why is A24 spending so much on ‘Elden Ring’?
The scale of the investment marks a major departure for A24. The studio has previously backed commercially ambitious films, including “Civil War” and “Marty Supreme”, but the reported “Elden Ring” budget places the fantasy adaptation in a different financial bracket.
The source material offers a substantial built-in audience. Developed by FromSoftware under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, “Elden Ring” launched in 2022 and became one of the most prominent action role-playing games of its generation. Its world and mythology were developed with contributions from George R. R. Martin, the author best known for “A Song of Ice and Fire”, the book series that inspired “Game of Thrones”.
The game is set in the Lands Between, a vast fantasy realm shaped by powerful figures, competing factions and the shattered Elden Ring at the centre of its mythology. Its appeal lies in its challenging combat, expansive exploration and deliberately layered world-building. Translating that experience into a feature film will require Garland to establish a cinematic narrative while retaining the atmosphere and scale that made the game distinctive.
Who is making the film?
Alex Garland, the filmmaker behind “Ex Machina”, “Annihilation” and “Civil War”, is writing and directing the adaptation. His previous work has frequently explored questions of power, identity, technology and human behaviour, although details of his approach to “Elden Ring” have not been revealed.
The ensemble includes Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz.
The film is produced by Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA Films, alongside George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis. A24 and Bandai Namco are behind the adaptation, which is being filmed for IMAX.
When will ‘Elden Ring’ release?
The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on March 3, 2028. It is currently in post-production, and A24 is expected to present the project to prospective buyers at the American Film Market, which runs from November 10 to 15 in Los Angeles.
With Amazon MGM already securing a substantial international streaming package, the remaining rights negotiations will determine how the film reaches audiences across different markets. For A24, the challenge will be to turn one of gaming’s most recognisable fantasy properties into a theatrical event capable of justifying a budget far beyond the studio’s usual range.
