‘Avengers: Doomsday’ vs ‘Dune: Part Three’: Marvel’s Box Office Battle May Be Over Before ‘Dunesday’ Begins
The box office battle between “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune: Part Three” may already have an early frontrunner, even before either film reaches theatres. With the two Hollywood tentpoles set to arrive on the same day, December 18, advance ticket sales are reportedly giving Marvel’s superhero ensemble a substantial lead over Denis Villeneuve’s next instalment in the “Dune” franchise. The early numbers have fuelled speculation that “Dunesday”, as the simultaneous release has come to be known, could be less competitive than initially anticipated.
According to box office tracker EmpireCity Box Office, advance sales for “Avengers: Doomsday” are outpacing those for “Dune: Part Three” by a ratio of approximately 3.2 to 4 tickets for every ticket sold for the latter. The tracker suggested that Marvel’s film could emerge as the clear winner of the opening weekend. However, the figures reflect early ticketing trends rather than a definitive prediction of either film’s eventual box office performance.
As of October 27, 2026, “Avengers: Doomsday” has reportedly crossed $125 million in advance ticket sales. An exact, independently confirmed advance sales total for “Dune: Part Three” has not been established yet.

The comparison also comes with an important caveat: “Avengers: Doomsday” began selling tickets considerably earlier than “Dune: Part Three”. Marvel’s film launched premium-format advance sales in July, before expanding availability, while the wider advance-booking window for Villeneuve’s film opened much later. That difference makes the current gap an imperfect measure of how audiences will ultimately respond to the two releases.
There is also a significant theatrical advantage in “Dune: Part Three”’s corner. The film has secured exclusive IMAX screenings in North America during the holiday period, giving it access to one of the most sought-after premium formats. “Avengers: Doomsday”, meanwhile, is expected to compete for audiences through other premium large-format screens, including those promoted under Disney’s Infinity Vision banner.
The two films are arriving at a time when event cinema continues to drive theatrical conversation. The prospect of watching two major releases on the same day has already invited comparisons with “Barbenheimer”, the 2023 phenomenon that saw Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” turn their shared release date into a cultural event. But the commercial dynamics of “Dunesday” are different: both films are large-scale franchise releases with overlapping audiences, making the contest for premium screens and opening-weekend attention particularly important.
“Avengers: Doomsday” carries the draw of Marvel’s returning ensemble, with Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Doctor Doom and the film bringing together characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Dune: Part Three”, meanwhile, continues Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction universe, with Timothée Chalamet returning as Paul Atreides.
For now, the early presales suggest that Marvel has the momentum heading into the December clash. But an opening-weekend lead would not necessarily settle the larger box office contest. Premium-format availability, audience reception, reviews and word of mouth will all influence how the films perform over the holiday season. The current numbers offer a snapshot of demand, not a verdict on the final box office standings.
Both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune: Part Three” are scheduled to release in theatres on December 18, 2026.
