Director Kabir Khan’s Vivaan Kabir has made a quiet and powerful directorial debut with “PROJECT +91” (@projectplus91), an Instagram series that rediscovers the cultural pulse of India's diversity through the lens of its youth.

“Project +91,” a source tells Variety India, “was born from a deep desire to hunt for a homeland whose reality feels increasingly distant to a generation with a fragmented experience of portions of it.” Helmed by Vivaan Kabir (aged 23), a team of mostly under-25 creators (Gautam Ahuja, Zaeem Khan, Kuhu Singh, Anas Arif, Parth Khadolia, Brian Dongardive, Afrah Sayed, Pramey Wadibhasme, Saleem Khan) went analog on this adventure.

Without ceremony, large crews or heavy equipment, “Project +91” started shooting earlier this year. The young director and his team travelled to Ladakh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Kashmir, Kerala, Meghalaya, Bengal, Kolhapur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Expect more states to be added to the list.

The mission, says the source, is to seek out the rawest stories from India. The research team finds stories, traditions, communities, and customs - the kind of stories this generation has only heard about, but not experienced, the kind of stories that might be lost if not documented. Vivaan then thoroughly verifies and authenticates the stories by spending time in the towns where they are based; afterward, he and a two-member crew travel to shoot them.

The series launched on October 6 and is slowly gaining ground.
