Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Becomes First Film To Cross 100-Crore In India On IMAX Screens Alone

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” has become the first film ever to cross ₹100 Crore at the box office in India from its IMAX screens alone. No film before this, Indian or international has reached the milestone before. The film passed the mark on Sep. 16, 2026 in the ninth week of release, with IMAX contributing to roughly 43% of total India gross despite the premium format’s screens accounting for just over 1% of the film's total screen count nationally.

The achievement also makes “The Odyssey” the highest-grossing IMAX release in Indian cinema history, surpassing the previous record held by another Nolan blockbuster “Oppenheimer.”

To mark the milestone, a celebratory exclusive IMAX re-release of “The Odyssey” from  October 9 is being planned.

Denzil Dias, who leads Universal Pictures International's theatrical distribution in India, says, “A result like this is not about one week or one number, it is a film finding its audience in the format it was built for, again and again, over ten weeks. To see IMAX alone cross ₹100 Crore, a number we normally talk about for an entire film's run, tells you how India watched ‘The Odyssey.’”

“Christopher Nolan shot ‘The Odyssey’ entirely with IMAX Film Cameras, and audiences across India have made it a phenomenon," notes Giovanni Dolci, Chief Commercial Officer, IMAX. “This historic run reflects the power of Nolan’s vision, the passion of Indian moviegoers, and the commitment of our partners to bringing the film to audiences.”

Mr. Gautam Dutta, CEO - Revenue and Operations, PVR INOX Limited said, “There are films audiences watch, and then there are films they truly want to experience. ‘The Odyssey’ has clearly been one of those films. The exceptional response to its IMAX screenings reflects the film’s scale and the strength of the format.”

Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinépolis India, said, "When a film is made for the big screen, audiences can tell, and they go looking for that screen. That's what happened with ‘The Odyssey.’ Crossing ₹100 crore from IMAX alone shows that people made a clear choice about how they wanted to watch it, and they kept making that choice for nine weeks. We're seeing audiences put a lot more thought into how they watch a film and that's a big part of why the experience sits at the centre of how we're building our cinemas."

Universal Pictures’ “The Odyssey,” directed by Christopher Nolan, is distributed in India by Warner Bros Pictures India.
