Box Office Weekend Winners: ‘Obsession’ Outshines New Releases, ‘Haunted 3D’ Springs A Surprise; ‘Peddi’ Dominates In The South

Ram Charan’s Telugu sports action drama “Peddi” beat the recent releases, while Hollywood horror “Obsession” continued its remarkable run in theatres, outperforming all the new releases even on its third weekend.

“Peddi”, which ended its extended first week at a massive ₹172.48 crore net, has maintained momentum in the second weekend, adding ₹20.67 crore net, emerging as the biggest weekend grosser during the June 12-14 frame. The film has so far collected ₹193.15 crore net at the domestic box office and around ₹280 crore worldwide.

Despite underwhelming collections in other languages, the Buchi Babu Sana-directed film has resonated strongly with its core Telugu audience, cementing its status as a major box-office force. The film has now become the second-highest-grossing Telugu film of this year, trailing Chiranjeevi’s action entertainer “Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu,” which collected ₹218 crore at the domestic box office in January. However, “Peddi” still has a long way to go to emerge as a success story as the film requires to collect at least ₹450 crore worldwide to break even.

Meanwhile, Hollywood horror “Obsession” showcased another strong staying power at the box office. The Curry Barker-directed psychological thriller collected ₹14.83 crore net during its third weekend, marking just 16% decline from its second weekend (₹17.60 crore), clearly indicating its sustained demand among audiences. The film recorded a bigger weekend than every new movie released this Friday.

With ₹64.33 crore net so far, “Obsession” has now become the second-highest-grossing Hollywood horror film of all time at the Indian box office. The film is now targeting the record of “The Conjuring Last Rites” (₹83.40 cr) to emerge as the biggest-ever horror, a milestone it is expected to surpass comfortably by next weekend. Globally, “Obsession” has grossed nearly $250 million worldwide.

Among the week’s new releases, “Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past” emerged as the biggest surprise. Vikram Bhatt’s horror film collected ₹9.37 crore over the weekend, a figure no one saw coming a week before. The film surprised everyone with its overwhelming opening of ₹2.55 crore on Friday, and maintained the momentum with impressive growth over the weekend, earning ₹3.20 crore on Saturday and ₹3.62 crore on Sunday.

“Haunted 3D” has exceeded expectations, but whether it can redefine the horror genre in Hindi cinema will largely depend on its long-term theatrical performance. The film has received mixed to negative reviews, which could restrict its box office prospects in the coming days. However, what its phenomenal opening has done is that it has reignited industry interest in the commercial viability of horror films.

Imtiaz Ali’s “Main Vaapas Aaunga,” despite excellent reviews, opened to disappointing numbers, collecting only ₹5.49 crore over the weekend. Although the film witnessed a healthy weekend growth after opening at merely ₹1.20 crore on Friday — it recorded a 60% jump on Saturday (₹1.82 cr) and another 35% on Sunday (₹2.47 cr) — the numbers are so low that it doesn’t make much difference.

The Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Raina-starrer romantic drama cannot be written off just yet though. The film has received widespread critical acclaim and extremely positive word of mouth from all across, with audiences calling it one of the best Imtiaz Ali films. The positive audience reception could help sustain weekday collections, but its overall box-office prospects still remain uncertain.

Other new releases like Kangana Ranaut’s “Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaat” and Manoj Bajpayee’s “Governor” collected ₹4.04 crore and ₹3.37 crore net, respectively. Both films failed to register growth even on Saturday and Sunday and are likely going to be written off as failures at the box office.

David Dhawan’s swansong “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Ha” collected ₹6.68 crore net on its second weekend, taking the 10-day total to ₹42.71 crore net. The Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde-starrer romantic drama is expected to finish its lifetime at around ₹50-55 crore net at the domestic box office.

From Hollywood, Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller “Disclosure Day” earned ₹6.21 crore net at the Indian box office, placing itself at the fifth place on the weekend table. Meanwhile, another horror film, “Backroom,” earned ₹3.12 crore net, continuing the good days for horror cinema in theatres.
