"Peddi" director Buchi Babu Sana has issued a public apology in a statement, following criticism surrounding the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor's character in the film. The controversy emerged after viewers and critics raised concerns about several scenes involving Kapoor's character, Achiyamma.
Social media discussions focused on the film's visual framing of the character and certain elements of its romantic track. The debate gained momentum in the days following the film's release, with many users arguing that the character had been objectified.
Responding to the criticism, Sana shared a statement on X (formerly called Twitter) acknowledging the feedback and confirming that changes would be made to "Peddi". He wrote "As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in 'Peddi' and have taken it seriously."

Sana said it was never the intention of the filmmakers to disrespect women through the film's portrayal. "I have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen, and it was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character. If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologize," he said.
The filmmaker also confirmed that the team has decided to alter the portions that drew criticism. "After reviewing the feedback, we have decided to make changes to the concerned portions. Cinema grows through its connection with audiences, and as storytellers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities."
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to respectful representation. "Every woman deserves to be respected, valued, and represented with dignity. We remain committed to telling stories that celebrate strong characters and uphold those values. Thank you to everyone who shared their views honestly and sincerely."

The statement comes after widespread online debate over the treatment of Janhvi Kapoor's character in "Peddi". The discussion also reignited broader conversations about the representation of women in mainstream commercial cinema and the role female characters are often given within male-led narratives.
Neither Kapoor nor the film's producers have publicly commented on the controversy. Sana's statement marks the first formal response from the creative team, and confirms that modifications to the film are now being made in response to audience feedback.
