Amid a crowded release calendar, two prominent Tamil films, Karthi-starrer “Sardar 2” and Soori’s “Mandaadi,” hit the screens today. While the films belong to different genres, both are targeting a similar demographic — audiences in the mass centers.

Interestingly, the clash does not appear to have hampered either film’s business, with both recording good footfalls in the morning shows. According to trade tracker Ramesh Bala, “Sardar 2” and “Mandaadi” registered similar occupancies of around 40%, which is a healthy start for a normal weekday.

While both films have opened to encouraging numbers, their fate at the box office depends on the merit of their content. While “Sardar 2” is crucial for Karthi, as his last two films underperformed at the box office, the success of “Mandaadi” could further strengthen Soori’s position as a leading actor.

“Sardar 2,” the spy-action thriller, sees Karthi return in a dual role, with Rajisha Vijayan also reprising her role from the first film. S. J. Suryah, Malavika Mohanan and Ashika Ranganath are among the new additions to the cast. Directed by P. S. Mithran, who also helmed the 2022 original, the film is produced by S. Lakshman Kumar and Ishan Saksena under their banners, Prince Pictures and IVY Entertainment.

Meanwhile, “Mandaadi,” a sports drama, is directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi of “Selfie” fame. “Mandaadi,” headlined by Soori, also marks the Tamil debut of Telugu actor Suhas, with Mahima Nambiar and Sathyaraj in supporting roles. Elred Kumar has produced the film under his banner RS Infotainment, with Vetrimaaran coming on board as creative producer. S. R. Kathir is the cinematographer for this visually appealing project,  with Pradeep E. Ragav overseeing the editing and G. V. Prakash Kumar composing the music. In addition to the standard 2D release, it has also been released in IMAX, EPIQ and Dolby Cinema formats.
