‘Obsession’ Emerges As A Box Office Sensation. Will It Become The Biggest Hollywood Horror Film In India?

Hollywood horror “Obsession” is defying all the projections and showing a rare staying power at the Indian box office.

Directed by YouTuber Curry Barker, the supernatural horror sensation has collected ₹17.60 crore net on its second weekend, almost matching its entire first week collection (₹18.19 crore). While this unprecedented trend showed the film’s extraordinary audience reception, its phenomenal hold on Monday has further underscored that the film is headed for a lengthy and highly successful theatrical run.

“Obsession” has collected ₹3.52 crore on its second Monday, performing even better than its second Friday (₹3.30 crore). Strong weekday growth after an outstanding second weekend is an uncommon phenomenon for Hollywood releases in India, but not for “Obsession.” With ₹39.31 crore net and ₹46.39 crore gross so far, the film has already become the third highest-grossing Hollywood title of the year in India, with trade experts now predicting it could even surpass the lifetimes of “Project Hail Mary” (₹74.90 cr) and “Michael” (₹69.35 cr) to emerge as the biggest Hollywood blockbuster at the Indian box office.

Although the film still has significant ground to cover before reaching those milestones, its unprecedented trend and exceptional audience response suggest that achieving those numbers remains a realistic possibility over the coming weeks.

Apart from the top-grossing title, “Obsession” is also chasing the record of one of the biggest Hollywood horror films ever released in India. The milestone of the highest-grossing Hollywood horror film is currently held by last year's “The Conjuring Last Rites,” which collected ₹83.40 crore net at the Indian box office.

Whether “Obsession” can ultimately surpass that record will depend on its staying power in the coming weeks. However, based on its current trajectory, the film seems well on course to become the second highest-grossing Hollywood horror film in India. The film is currently at the 7th rank among the top horror titles and is expected to climb to 4th place by the end of this week, after which it will continue its pursuit of the all-time leaders in the genre.
