The Nolan Effect: Indian Fans Pay Premium Prices for ‘The Odyssey’ IMAX Spectacle

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” has sparked an incredible booking rush in India, more than a month before its July 17 release. When advance IMAX bookings opened on Monday, June 8, 2026, moviegoers rushed online to lock in seats. India is one of the only international markets alongside the United States to open ticket sales this early, proving how popular Nolan's films are in the country.

Looking at the advance booking numbers, the response is quite extraordinary. “The Odyssey” has already sold 150,000 tickets for its opening weekend presales. To give some context on how significant this is, Nolan's previous blockbuster “Oppenheimer” had sold approximately 65,000 tickets at the same point in its booking cycle back in 2023.

However, the excitement came with a lot of surprise over the cost, as ticket prices across major cities jumped to rates usually seen for big live concerts.

IMAX Ticket Prices Across Indian Cities

Prices vary widely depending on where you live, with Pune surprisingly turning out to be the most expensive place to watch the film. Meanwhile, in cities like Mumbai, tickets for premium recliner rows are being listed as high as ₹3,200.

Pune & Mumbai: Evening shows at Cinepolis Aundh and Inox Megaplex in Pune hit record highs of ₹1,600 to ₹3,000. In Mumbai, PVR Lower Parel listed late-night screenings between ₹1,500 and ₹3,300, while Cinepolis Seawoods reached ₹2,000. On the cheaper side, Inox Malad offered morning seats starting at ₹450.

Delhi-NCR: Prices here were a bit more balanced. While luxury recliner seats at PVR Priya reached ₹1,400, standard morning shows at Inox Paras provided the country's cheapest tickets at ₹370 to ₹490.

The South and Kolkata: Bengaluru’s Cinepolis Nexus kept prices between ₹900 and ₹1,000. In contrast, local government rules in Chennai and Coimbatore strictly limited ticket rates to a flat ₹508. Meanwhile, Kolkata’s Inox South City offered evening shows for a modest ₹680 to ₹710.

Nolan Fans Complain About Ticket Costs on X

The high prices quickly started big debates on X (formerly Twitter), with fans upset over how expensive tickets have become. The disappointment was even higher because most Indian theatres use regular 1:90:1 IMAX screens rather than the traditional, giant IMAX 1:43:1 (70mm) film format.

One moviegoer shared their frustration online, writing: “Absolutely shameful price gouging... 1300 for Odyssey is absolutely not worth it. This monopoly... is horrible and needs to be reprimanded.”

Another user pointed out the screen format issue, saying:  "Bookings for #Odyssey are opened & WTF are these pricings??? & Who tf are these ppl who are willing to pay 1800 to a movie?? It's not even original IMAX format ."

Yet, despite the online complaints and steep rates, shows are selling out within minutes. The trend shows that for a technical spectacle like this, the premium Indian audience is increasingly prioritizing the format and the quality of the theater over the cost of the ticket. As one fan posted on X:  "THE ODYSSEY tickets are selling for a MASSIVE ₹3,200 in India and the MOST UNBELIEVABLE PART is that they are getting SOLD OUT within minutes UNIMAGINABLE CRAZE FOR NOLAN ."

About The Odyssey Movie Cast and Story

An adaptation of Homer's famous ancient Greek epic poem, “The Odyssey” makes cinema history as the first feature film shot entirely using brand-new IMAX film cameras. The massive mythological story follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, on his long and dangerous journey home after the fall of Troy. The film features an all-star ensemble cast, starring Matt Damon in the main role as Odysseus. Anne Hathaway portrays his faithful wife Penelope, while Tom Holland plays his son Telemachus. Robert Pattinson joins the crew as Penelope's persistent suitor Antinous, with Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya rounding out the star-studded lineup.
