Box office Weekend Winners: Suriya’s ‘Karuppu’ Roars at Box Office; ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh Do’ Shows Steady Growth
Tamil superstar Suriya has made his comeback in style. His action entertainer “Karuppu” is dominating in theatres, comfortably emerging as the winner of the May 15-17 weekend at the Indian box office.
Despite facing last-minute cancellation and widespread confusion among the audience ahead of its release, “Karuppu” opened extremely well on Friday, earning ₹14.50 crore net on the first day. The film continued the momentum and witnessed a significant surge on Saturday and Sunday, collecting ₹20.50 crore and ₹23.50 crore net, respectively, for a spectacular weekend of ₹58.50 crore net. The film is trending well in both Tamil and Telugu languages and with positive word of mouth among audiences, it's expected to perform well on weekdays too. Its Monday hold will now play a crucial role in determining the film’s long-term box office trajectory.
Malayalam film “Athiradi” claimed the second spot. The Tovino Thomas and Basil Joseph-starrer released on Thursday and collected ₹21.02 crore net in its 4-day weekend, including paid previews. This is proving to be a great year for Malayalam cinema, and “Athiradi” is yet another addition to the industry’s growing list of box office successes this year.

Fourth place went to Riteish Deshmukh's “Raja Shivaji”. The historical epic added ₹7.18 crore net on its third weekend, taking its total to ₹81.82 crore net, including ₹58.78 crore net from the Marathi version alone. The film has displayed a remarkably steady hold at the box office since its release and witnessed further growth during its second weekend. Its sustained performance indicates strong audience acceptance, particularly among family audiences, many of whom are turning up in large numbers with children. The film has so far amassed ₹20.22 crore net at the Indian box office.
Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan's horror-comedy “Bhooth Bangla” added ₹3.85 crore on its 5th weekend, pushing its overall total to ₹161.21 crore net. The film has comfortably exceeded trade expectations and emerged as a clear box office success.
As for Hollywood, “Michael” continues getting the audience's love. In its fourth weekend, the Michael Jackson biopic added ₹4.26 crore net, taking its total to ₹58.51 crore. The musical biopic is now the second-biggest Hollywood grosser in India this year, behind “Project Hail Mary,” which has earned over ₹73 crore net.
