The Independence Day weekend proved strong for the Indian box office, with most new releases, as well as holdover titles, drawing audiences to theaters. While Emraan Hashmi’s “Awarapan 2” and Suriya-starrer “Vishwanath and Sons” posted impressive totals, “Batwara 1947,” headlined by Sunny Deol, received a lackluster response in its opening weekend.

Impressive Opening Weekend For ‘Awarapan 2,’ ‘Vishwanath And Sons’
Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani-starrer “Awarapan 2,” which earned ₹81.75 crore, registered the third-biggest opening weekend for a Hindi film in 2026, after “Dhurandhar 2” and “Border 2.” The film has emerged as a hit and is expected to enter the ₹100 crore club in the next few days.

Suriya continued his successful box office streak after “Karuppu” with “Vishwanath and Sons,” which collected ₹58.15 crore in its opening weekend. The Venky Atluri directorial, which also stars Mamitha Baiju, will now enjoy a free run with no major competition in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

‘Batwara 1947’ Registers Weak Numbers
Sunny Deol’s Partition drama had an underwhelming first weekend as “Awarapan 2” remained the audience’s first choice. While the film witnessed a huge jump on Independence Day (August 15), its overall weekend collection remained on the lower side at ₹26.50 crore.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Remains Strong
Despite the arrival of several new releases, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained strong in its third weekend, raking in ₹22.8 crore. The superhero film now stands at a total collection of ₹466.20 crore.

Holdover Releases In Survival Mode
Among the holdover releases, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s “DC” maintained a steady run, collecting ₹12.86 crore over the weekend. Its total now stands at ₹54.76 crore.

Meanwhile, Vismaya Mohanlal’s debut film “Thudakkam” collected ₹4.29 crore in its second weekend, taking its total to ₹20.34 crore.

Varun Tej Konidela’s horror-comedy, “Korean Kanakaraju,” also benefited from the Independence Day holiday, adding ₹3.49 crore to its tally. The film’s total collection now stands at ₹22.50 crore.
