‘Awarapan 2’ Races Ahead Of ‘Batwara 1947’ On Its First Day; ‘Vishwanath And Sons’ Opens To Strong Numbers
The Indian box office registered strong numbers yesterday (August 14), with the Emraan Hashmi-starrer “Awarapan 2” leading the way by a wide margin. While Sunny Deol’s “Batwara 1947” took a slow start, Suriya’s “Vishwanath And Sons” opened to healthy numbers in the southern part of the country.
“Awarapan 2,” the romantic action-drama, emerged as the top-performing film, with Tier-2 cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, and Bhopal, among others, contributing majorly to its business. The movie raked in ₹21 crore and is expected to witness an upward swing today, thanks to the National Holiday on August 15 (Independence Day).
Sunny Deol’s partition drama, “Batwara 1947,” which released alongside “Awarapan 2,” underperformed on its first day, collecting ₹5.75 crore. The film’s opening day collections are below expectations considering the box office reputation of the lead protagonist - Sunny Deol. Also starring Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal and Shabana Azmi, the movie needs to show solid growth today and tomorrow to post a respectable first-weekend total.
“Vishwanath And Sons,” headlined by Suriya, Mamitha Baiju, Radikaa Sarathkumar and Raveena Tandon, enjoyed a good first day with collections of ₹15.15 crore. With positive word-of-mouth and encouraging response from its target audience, the family romantic drama is on track to cross the ₹50 crore mark in its first three days.
