Box Office: Ram Charan’s ‘Peddi’ Makes Sensational 100 Crore+ Worldwide Debut, But Struggles in Hindi Belts

Ram Charan's much-anticipated “Peddi” has made a sensational debut at the box office.

The sports action drama has collected a thunderous ₹101.07 crore gross worldwide on its first-day, recording Ram Charan's career-best solo film opening. Backed by its strong pre-release buzz, extensive promotional campaigns and exceptional advance bookings across India and key overseas markets such as North America, the film has emerged as a major box office force from the very first day and has emerged as only the 11th Telugu film to score a 100 crore+ worldwide opening since S.S. Rajamouli's “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” first achieved that feat.

At the domestic box office, “Peddi” has opened to a massive ₹60.23 crore net, including paid previews. The film began its thunderous box office journey on Wednesday with its paid premieres contributing around ₹16.53 crore net — third highest paid previews in India after “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” and “They Call Him OG”.

On its first day of full-fledged theatrical release on Thursday, “Peddi” collected ₹43.70 crore net at the Indian box office, pushing its total opening to ₹60.23 crore net. The film has already become the third-highest-grossing Telugu film of the year worldwide, trailing only Chiranjeevi's “Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu” (₹301.49 crore) and Prabhas' “The Raja Saab” (₹208.39 crore). Given its explosive start, the film will eventually emerge as the highest-grossing Telugu film of this year, with projections suggesting a potential lifetime worldwide gross of over ₹400 crore.

However, despite the massive opening, what's concerning for this film is its disastrous performance in other languages. The Buchi Babu Sana-directed film has miserably failed to take off anywhere except the Telugu region. It has collected a mere ₹3 crore in Hindi, ₹45 lakhs in Tamil, ₹20 lakhs in Kannada and ₹5 lakhs in Malayalam. These figures indicate that the film has largely failed to create any awareness or excitement beyond its core Telugu-speaking audience, despite it being marketed as a large-scale pan-India spectacle.

The massive promotional events in North India also seems to have had limited impact at the Hindi box office, with audiences seem to be simply ignoring this Ram Charan- Janhvi Kapoor starrer.

Adding to the challenge are the film's mixed reviews and divided audience reception which could potentially impact its box-office momentum in the coming days. Nevertheless, “Peddi” remains firmly on course for a strong opening weekend both domestically and internationally. Its long-term performance will largely depend on its authentic word of mouth, though the film requires to collect at least ₹450 crore worldwide to break even due to its massive production cost of ₹350 crore.
