In 2026, several studios are making a strong case for kids and their parents to head back to the theaters. This year's theatrical slate is packed with animated sequels, live-action adaptations, gaming properties and established franchises. From “Toy Story 5” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” to “Moana” and “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie,” makers are spotlighting characters audiences already know while giving them a grand theatrical scale.
The strategy is already paying off. April-release “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” became the first film of 2026 to cross $1 billion globally, while “Toy Story 5,” which followed in late July, became the third billion-dollar film of the year.
Here are some of the films driving the family-friendly theatrical comeback.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’: Video Games Become Family Cinema
Release date: April 1, 2026

More importantly, it became a genuine theatrical event rather than simply another animated release.
The film crossed $1 billion worldwide in its 10th weekend, making it the first movie released in 2026 to reach the milestone. It has collected around $1.3 billion worldwide. The movie has a gross income of $1.3 million (Rs 12.40 crore) in India.
‘Toy Story 5’: Generational Appeal
Release date: June 19, 2026
Pixar brought Woody, Buzz and Jessie back for another theatrical adventure with “Toy Story 5.” Released in June, the film pits the toys against a new challenge - technology - in the form of a tablet that becomes Bonnie's new favorite. The film’s biggest advantage could simply be familiarity. Parents who grew up with the earlier “Toy Story” films had an opportunity to introduce the franchise to their children on the big screen.
That cross-generational appeal has translated into serious box-office returns. “Toy Story 5” opened to $312 million worldwide and went on to cross the $1 billion mark globally. According to Box Office Mojo, it has collected around $1.1 billion worldwide and $1.1 million (Rs 10.43 crore) in India.
‘Minions & Monsters’: The Franchise Machine That Keeps Going
Release date: July 1, 2026
The Minions have become one of Hollywood’s most reliable family franchises, and “Minions & Monsters” proved that once again. The seventh overall film in the “Despicable Me” franchise and the third Minions prequel, the film moves the characters into 1920s Hollywood, where they attempt to make their own monster movie.
The formula remains straightforward: familiar characters and comedy that appeals to children. The film collected $513 million worldwide and $1.2 million (Rs 11.4 crore) in India.
‘Moana’: Live Action Entertainment
Release date: July 10, 2026
Disney is also turning to live-action adaptations to bring established stories to a younger audience. The live-action “Moana” featured Catherine Laga’aia in the title role, with Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui. Though the film’s run did not match expectations, it brought a live-action scale designed for the big screen. “Moana” collected $315 million worldwide. In India, the film grossed $527,000 (Rs 5.03 crore).
‘PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie’: The Power of Familiar Characters
Release Date: August 21, 2026
“PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” taps into the enduring appeal of the “PAW Patrol” franchise. The film combines the series’ recognizable characters and themes of teamwork, friendship and problem-solving with the added excitement of dinosaurs, giving younger viewers a fresh adventure while retaining the elements they already love. For families, the franchise offers a rare combination of colorful animation, accessible storytelling and age-appropriate action, making “The Dino Movie” a natural big-screen outing for children and parents alike.
It collected $124 million worldwide and Rs 2.92 crore in India.
Why Studios Are Betting on Family Films Again
The biggest shift is that family cinema is increasingly being treated as event cinema. A family trip to the theater means multiple tickets and concessions and in some cases, it can also generate repeat viewings. Their commercial potential extends well beyond the box office through toys, games, merchandise, theme-park attractions and streaming.
