The September 18 box office clash between Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kunal Kemmu is shaping up to be a closely watched contest, with Meghna Gulzar’s “Daayra” and Kemmu’s “Vibe” arriving in cinemas on the same day. According to analytics platform Recobee, “Vibe” is currently projected to open at around ₹1.6 crore on Friday, while “Daayra” is tracking at approximately ₹1.1 crore.
The numbers point to a modest opening for both films, with the clash bringing two distinctly different theatrical propositions into the market. “Daayra” brings together Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran under Meghna Gulzar’s direction in an investigative thriller centered on two police officers who find themselves on opposing sides of a controversial case. Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj plays DCP Raman Kumar. The film explores questions of justice, procedure and accountability.
“Vibe”, meanwhile, marks Kemmu’s second directorial outing after “Madgaon Express”. The film sees Kemmu write, direct, produce and headline an action-comedy alongside Preity Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastava and Vanshika Dhir. The story follows two hapless friends whose chaotic lives take an unexpected turn, setting them on a far bigger adventure.

The Recobee projection puts “Vibe” ahead of “Daayra” at the start, although the gap remains relatively narrow. Both films are also arriving with an A certificate, putting them in a similar adult-skewing theatrical bracket despite their contrasting genres.
The clash also comes with an unusual family connection. Kareena Kapoor Khan is Kunal Kemmu’s sister-in-law, while “Vibe” features Sharmila Tagore, Kemmu’s mother-in-law, in a cameo. That makes the September 18 face-off an interesting one beyond the box office numbers, with the two films bringing different combinations of stars, genres and audience expectations to theatres. The actual Friday numbers will determine how closely the films follow their pre-release projections.
