Summer 2026: How Tollywood Wasted Its Most Important Season

Summer is considered the golden period for Telugu cinema. With schools closed, holidays in full swing and families looking for entertainment, theatres usually witness packed crowds during April and May. Producers target this season because it can yield good results at the box office.

However, summer 2026 has turned out to be one of the most disappointing phases for Tollywood. What makes the failure more visible is the comparison with summer 2025, which had multiple releases and kept audiences constantly engaged.

Last year, the excitement began right at the end of March with “Robinhood” followed immediately by “Mad 2”. April continued the momentum with films like “Jack” and “Ghaati”. The energy grew stronger in May. “HIT: The Third Case” arrived on May 1 and generated strong buzz among thriller lovers. Then came one of the biggest talking points of the season: the clash between “Hari Hara Veera Mallu” and “Mass Jathara”.

Fans flooded social media with debates, advance bookings soared, and theatres enjoyed strong occupancy. Finally, Kingdom wrapped up the season with a solid release, giving exhibitors one last big film before the holidays ended. Though a few of these films ended up as flops, audiences still had something to watch in theatres during the hot summer season.

The first big release of summer 2026 was Pawan Kalyan’s “Ustaad Bhagat Singh”, which released on March 20. But sadly, it did not set the ball rolling, as it flopped at the box office. Other noted films like “Biker”, “Raakasa”, “Bad Boy Karthik”, “Band Melam”, “Thimmarajupalli TV”, and “Jet Lee” came out one after another but did not make any impact.

Ask if IPL is the reason for this, actor-director Rahul Ravindran says, “IPL no longer affects movies across India the way it once did. However, things are slightly different in the Telugu states this year because Sunrisers Hyderabad has been performing extremely well. Whenever SRH enters strong form, audience attention towards the IPL naturally increases in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This has affected evening and night show occupancy in theatres. Many small films are suffering because audiences are choosing cricket over cinema during weekdays and weekends alike.”

Compared to that packed calendar, summer 2026 feels empty. So far, only “Dacoit” has emerged as a successful release. Apart from that, theatres have largely depended on small films, many of which failed to attract audiences. Highly anticipated projects like “Swayambhu,” “Maa Inti Bangaaram” and “Peddi” were postponed, creating a major gap in the release schedule.

Many industry insiders believe IPL alone is not responsible for this dry spell. Noted director Pradeep Maddali says, “Our star heroes are running after pan-India releases. Extensive shoots, long gaps and release windows across India have left the makers clueless about release dates.”

Adding to this, noted journalist Dheeraj Babu says, “The main reason for a dull summer is Ram Charan’s “Peddi.” As the film was announced for an April 30 release, many big films were not keen on releasing alongside it. When the film’s release was postponed, it created a lot of confusion, and the lucrative summer season was wasted without a proper major release.” The film is now expected to release on June 4, by which time the crucial summer holiday season will already be over.

The impact on theatres has been severe. Single-screen theatres across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are witnessing shockingly low occupancy. Exhibitors in Telangana are even discussing temporary shutdowns because there simply are not enough major films to sustain business.

Popular distributor Srinivas Reddy says, “The bigger problem lies in the lack of planning within the industry. Producers are announcing release dates without properly calculating shooting schedules, post-production timelines, and promotional requirements. No major film actually arrived on its initially announced date this year.”

Summer holidays are traditionally the most profitable period for Tollywood, but 2026 has been a season of missed opportunities, postponements, and poor scheduling decisions. While big films like “Vishwambhara” also failed to release this summer, some exciting films like “The Paradise”, “Naga Bandhanam”, “Bhogi, Ranabaali”, and Prabhas’ “Fauzi” will hit screens later this year. It remains to be seen how these films fare at the box office.
