Box Office: ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ clocks low numbers, ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’ and ‘Governor’ Open Below ₹1 Crore
Romance, patriotism and aliens couldn’t roar as audiences showed a preference for horror movies. As “Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past” exceeded expectations, audiences continued to obsess over “Obsession” and “Backrooms” registered a decent opening, new releases from other genres underperformed this Friday.
The biggest release this week, Imtiaz Ali’s “Main Vaapas Aaunga,” despite great reviews, opened to ₹1.20 crore net on Friday. Less than half of the projected ₹3 crore opening, which was already considered below par by trade analysts. Despite boasting an impressive package — new pair Vedang Raina and Sharvari, Diljit Dosanjh and Naseeruddin Shah in powerful roles, soulful music by A. R. Rahman and Imtiaz Ali’s signature storytelling — the film failed to attract audiences on its first day.
However, “Main Vaapas Aaunga” has glowing word of mouth, which might help the numbers grow over the weekend. The low opening might hamper the film’s lifetime collections. For now, its box office trajectory remains uncertain. In comparison, Vikram Bhatt’s “Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past,” despite an unknown cast, negligible pre-release buzz and hardly any promotional support, has collected ₹2.55 crore net on Friday.

Kangana Ranaut’s “Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata” and Manoj Bajpayee’s “Governor” failed to cross the ₹1 crore mark on the opening day. Kangana’s film collected ₹95 lakhs, while Manoj’s financial thriller earned ₹86 lakhs on Friday, marking their disappointing start.
While Ranaut’s film has received favorable reviews and could see more footfall over the weekend, “Governor” has received mixed reviews, which may restrict its potential business further in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller “Disclosure Day” has opened well. The film collected ₹1.81 crore net on Friday, despite stiff competition from other Hollywood titles like “Obsession” and “Backrooms.” The Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Colman Domingo-starrer recorded the second biggest opening among this week’s new releases after “Haunted 3D” and is expected to witness a healthy growth on Saturday and Sunday, with projections suggesting a ₹7-8 crore net opening weekend.
On the other hand, Varun Dhawan’s “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” added ₹1.85 crore on its second Friday. The film registered a 40% decline from Thursday, primarily due to a reduction in screen count following the arrival of six new releases this week. Nevertheless, the film has collected ₹37.88 crore net so far, with trade experts expecting it to finish the lifetime under ₹55-60 crore net. The David Dhawan directorial has turned out to be a disappointment at the box office.
