‘The Odyssey’ Box Office: IMAX Tickets Contribute To Over 48% of Pre-Advance Sales in India

The anticipation for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is at its peak, as the film arrives in cinemas tomorrow. The excitement in India around the film is resulting in phenomenal pre-advance sales numbers.

According to the movie analytics platform RecoBee, the film has sold 6,14,000 tickets for its opening weekend worth Rs 27.19 crore. Out of this, 1,12,000 tickets costing Rs 13.13 crore are of 34 IMAX-format screens across the country.

With over 48% contribution coming from the premium format, it is clear that cinegoers are willing to pay premium prices for high-quality cinema and, of course, the brand name, Christopher Nolan.

The director is among the rare filmmakers who draw audiences to theaters purely by their own name. He enjoys a tremendous fanbase in India and global markets, courtesy of his elite filmography: “Following,” “Memento, “Insomnia,” “Batman Begins,” “The Prestige,” “The Dark Knight,” “Inception,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Interstellar,” “Dunkirk,” “Tenet” and “Oppenheimer.”

While the film is expected to take a mega opening of Rs 20 crore in India, international reports predict a $90-100 million opening frame in North America, alongside another $110 million in the overseas market. With $200 million globally, the film is set to have one of the biggest openings of the year.

Made on a humongous budget of $250 million, it is the first film to be shot entirely on IMAX. It also marks the most expensive film in the director’s career.

Starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, “The Odyssey” is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan under their banner Syncopy.
