‘Jana Nayagan’: Will the Leak Affect Its Box Office Performance?
Thalapathy Vijay had intended to bid farewell to his celluloid innings with “Jana Nayagan.” However, the film ran into several issues with the CBFC and could not be released as planned. What made matters infinitely worse for this beleaguered movie was the film’s recent online leak.
While the film will probably be released soon, the question is, will “Jana Nayagan” take an opening that was expected from it a few months ago?
Ramesh Bala, a prominent trade tracker from Chennai, tells Variety India, “A film leak is a major thing. Many people have watched the pirated version. I don't know when it is going to be released. But whenever it releases, it will be a very muted response, and the opening will be poor. Still, fans and some family audiences might watch it. So, it may collect 50% of what was originally intended.”

Another prominent exhibitor and director of Aashirwad Theatres Pvt Ltd, Akkshay Rathie, also echoes Bala’s views and tells us, “I definitely think it will be impacted because the movie had political undertones and given the fact that it was, you know, designed to be a vehicle that would have in some sense been a soft part of Thalapathy Vijay's political campaign. Now that it's out, it will not just lose the advantage of being fresh new content for the audience to watch, but also become slightly contextually irrelevant. Because it was like a film that had political undertones, and that would have made a lot of sense before he contested the elections as part of his election campaign. But now that the elections are over and done with, it has been robbed of its sheen and the euphoria surrounding it. Many have already watched the film, unfortunately, on pirated mediums.”
“I actually think it's a calamity that has happened, and I hope that the perpetrators of this act of piracy are brought to justice in a manner that nobody dares do it again,” Rathie adds.
Directed by H.Vinoth of "Nerkonda Paarvai," "Valimai" and "Thunivu" fame, the movie also features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju in key roles. It is bankrolled by Venkat K. Narayana under the banner of KVN Productions. The music of "Jana Nayagan" is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
