Advance bookings for “Ramayana” opened across the country on Dussehra, drawing a strong response from cinegoers. Despite steep ticket prices, the film has sold over 1.5 lakh tickets and grossed ₹8.6 crore, as per Recobee.AI.

Interestingly, the IMAX format generated 26.74% of its revenue, amounting to ₹2.3 crore gross, despite contributing just 13.47% of ticket sales with 20,200 tickets.

With more than 10 days to go before its grand arrival at the box office, “Ramayana” is expected to register one of the biggest pre-sales in Indian cinema’s history. Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions handles domestic distribution and bagged the rights for a massive 350 crore.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, best known for “Dangal” and “Chhichhore,” “Ramayana” will be released in two parts. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanumana.

The pan-India ensemble cast also includes Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Arun Govil as King Dashrath, Indira Krishnan as Queen Kaushalya, Sheeba Chadha as Manthara, Addinath M Kothare as Bharat and Kunal Kapoor as Lord Indra, among others.

Bankrolled by Namit Malhotra, CEO of DNEG and Founder of Prime Focus, the music of “Ramayana” is composed by maestros Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman.

At the box office, “Ramayana” will face competition from Suriya’s “Scene” and Nayanthara’s “Mookuthi Amman 2” in Tamil Nadu. In international markets, the film will compete with “Godzilla Minus Zero,” the sequel to 2023’s “Godzilla Minus One.” Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the Japanese epic kaiju film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe and Min Tanaka, among others.
