The post-COVID era has been defined by cinematic spectacles and big-screen actioners, where big stars with huge scales and productions rule the box office. The volume of mid-budget films has diminished in Hindi and Telugu cinema; evidently, while the Tamil industry has managed to produce a few, it is Malayalam cinema that has mastered this space through its relevant content and smart production work. In fact, these films have also performed phenomenally well in overseas circuits, in addition to doing record-breaking business in the domestic market.
Prominent distributor and producer G Dhananjheyan credits the Kerala audience for supporting content-driven films. He says, “Malayalam film audiences were not top artiste-driven, but more driven by content. Hence, we often notice several small-budget films also doing amazing box office collections, e.g., “Premalu,” “Eko,” “Romancham,” “Kishkindha Kaandam,” “Manjummel Boys,” etc.

If audiences patronize small-budget films, one can certainly expect a bigger response to popular artiste-based films like “Vaazha 2,” “Aadu 2,” and “BKU.” Content drives the audience support in Malayalam cinema, irrespective of the budget or actors, which is a key difference.”
Ramesh Bala, trade tracker from Chennai, reflects Dhananjheyan’s thoughts as he says, “Malayalam cinema has mastered the mid-budget space by prioritizing strong, rooted stories over unnecessary scale. Films like ‘Vaazha 2,’ ‘Aadu 3’ and ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ combine controlled budgets with strong audience connect and word of mouth. With Malayalam cinema now reaching audiences beyond Kerala, these films have the potential to deliver returns far bigger than their budgets.”
With films like “Titans,” featuring Jayasurya, Vinayakan, Baby Jean, Indrans, and Nihal Nizam, K.K. Kuzhalmannam-headlined “Ozhiyathe” and “Athimanoharam” starring Mohanlal and Meera Jasmine, Malayalam cinema is expected to end the year on a high note.
