BARC Suspends TRPs: Indian Television Industry Hopes For Speedy Redressal To The Situation (EXCLUSIVE)
The sudden decision to suspend TRPs (television rating points) across genres on Indian television last week took everyone by surprise. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has passed a directive that the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) cannot publish the ratings until it renews its licence. Indian broadcasters will discuss this matter with MIB members to find a solution.
The broadcasters will urge ministers to expedite the matter, Variety India has learnt. This could mean that TV TRPs will be back in a month’s time. When approached earlier, many producers had expressed a similar feeling.

However, this is not the first stand-off between BARC and MIB. Gaurav Dwivedi (IAS), CEO of Prasar Bharati, who also serves as a key member and director of BARC, is tight-lipped on the matter. When Variety India contacted him, he said that this matter would be best addressed by the Ministry and he had nothing to add on the same. “The Ministry is best equipped to answer all queries around TRPs. The IDBF and Ministry are discussing the matter,” he said.
Rajesh Ram Singh, Producer and co-founder of Cockcrow and Shaika Entertainment, the company that made TV shows like “Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin,” “Deewaniyat,” and “Choti Sarrdaarni,” feels producers have little role to play in this stand-off. He says, “The producer fraternity is waiting for the outcome of this discussion. Of late, TV ratings of shows have been quite low as compared to what we would see two to three years ago. I feel it was good even during COVID. We definitely need the ratings system to improve as producers are the ultimate sufferers. In the current situation, it is impossible to gauge how TV shows are faring.”
"Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan," "Vasudha" and "Tumm Se Tumm Tak" are shows dominating the TRP charts as of now.
