After delivering a box-office hit with “OMG 2,” director Amit Rai came up with a small-budget but heartwarming flick titled “Ohh My Dog.” Despite being sandwiched between Hollywood biggie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and two prominent Hindi films: “Awarapan 2” and “Batwara 1947,” the film managed to hold its ground.

Now, after remaining steady at the ticket windows for two weeks, “Ohh My Dog” has witnessed a spike in screens and shows across the country.

The film opened to roughly 397 screens with around 800 shows in its first week; however, it went down to 45 screens with just 100 shows in the following week due to the arrival of “Awarapan 2” and “Batwara 1947.” But with public demand and poor response to the latter, “Ohh My Dog” has seen a spike with 86 screens and 200 shows.

Director Amit Rai tells Variety India that the film is now on the verge of recovering its production cost, and it is because of the weekday performances that it has managed to get that number of screens in its third week. “Two big films came out last week. But as soon as Friday, Saturday and Sunday got over, our shows picked up and received occupancy of around 80% to housefull. This week, the theater owners have observed the demand and doubled the number of shows and increased the number of screens across India. The public has run this film.”

The filmmaker credits the success to the element of compassion the film generates, to surviving the onslaught of a huge film like “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” He notes, “We were stuck in the wave that followed. We stood up to the challenge and survived.”

Unlike northern markets, “Ohh My Dog” has received tremendous support in South India with actors and directors like Nagarjuna, Amala Akkineni and B. V. Nandini Reddy promoting the film in a special way.

“Amala, Nagarjuna and Nandini (who made ‘Maa Inti Bangaram’ with Samantha Ruth Prabhu) sent me the ticket money for the film. Nandini sent me ₹5000 on UPI. She said, ‘You’ve made such a good film. I don't know whether I should give you ₹50 crore or ₹500 crores.’ Nagarjuna and Amala arranged a show and showed it to everyone.”
