Sebastian Stan Says ‘It’s A Long Winter’ On ‘The Batman: Part II’ As Matt Reeves’ Sequel Heads Into Snowy Gotham

Sebastian Stan may have inadvertently found the perfect phrase to describe the world of "The Batman: Part II". As Matt Reeves takes Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight into a snow covered Gotham, Stan has described his remaining work on the highly anticipated sequel as “a long winter”.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Stan was asked how much of his job on "The Batman: Part II" was still left. “A very long time, yep. It’s a long winter,” the actor replied. While Stan was referring to the amount of work he still has ahead of him on the film, the choice of words lands differently given what Reeves has already revealed about the sequel’s setting.

In May, Reeves shared camera test images showing the Batmobile driving through snow, captioning the post “#SnowTires”. When a fan interpreted the images as confirmation that Batman would be seen in the snow, Reeves responded, “Indeed, it is.” The snowy imagery marked a distinct visual shift from "The Batman", which presented Gotham as a rain soaked, nocturnal city.

The winter setting has already sparked plenty of speculation around what Reeves has planned for Pattinson’s second outing as the Caped Crusader. Fans have wondered whether the snow could point towards villains such as Mr Freeze, while others have drawn comparisons with the wintry Gotham of Tim Burton’s "Batman Returns". However, neither Mr Freeze nor any other specific snow related villain has been confirmed for the film, making it important to separate the visual clues from fan theories.

"The Batman: Part II" sees Pattinson return as Bruce Wayne and Batman, with Jeffrey Wright reprising his role as James Gordon, Andy Serkis returning as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell back as Oswald “Oz” Cobb. Reeves is once again directing and co writing the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin.

Stan is among the sequel’s new additions, alongside Scarlett Johansson, Jayme Lawson and Charles Dance. The details of Stan’s character have been kept tightly under wraps. While several reports have linked him to Harvey Dent, more recent reporting has noted that Stan was misquoted when he appeared to confirm the role, and the claim was subsequently removed from the original report. As of now, his character should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.

Production is currently underway, with Glasgow being transformed into Gotham for the shoot. Recent filming activity has also taken place in London, where Pattinson is continuing work on the sequel. The film is now scheduled to release in theatres on February 18, 2028, after Warner Bros. moved it from its previously announced October 1, 2027 date.

The long wait has only added to the intrigue around Reeves’ follow up. "The Batman" opened in 2022, and Pattinson’s return will come nearly six years after his first solo outing as the Dark Knight. The sequel has also faced several delays, including the impact of the Hollywood strikes and subsequent changes to Warner Bros.’ release calendar.

Pattinson recently described the experience of filming the sequel as significantly harder physically than the first film, particularly when it comes to the action and fight sequences. He has also teased that Reeves’ new vision looks markedly different from the first movie, calling it a “radical retelling” of the character.
