Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” is getting a six-part limited series adaptation on Netflix, starring “The Crown” actor Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and James Bond hopeful Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy. And the ardently awaited official trailer teases that come December, yearning season will have officially begun.
The series’ first look and teaser had already revealed the casting: Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet, Rufus Sewell as Mr. Bennet, Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet, Hollie Avery as Kitty Bennet, Rhea Norwood as Lydia Bennet, Hopey Parish as Mary Bennet, Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley, Jamie Demetriou as Mr. Collins, Louis Partridge as George Wickham, with Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh. And the trailer offers a detailed glimpse of all these characters, including Colman’s Mrs. Bennet saying what is possibly the most famous first sentence of any novel: “It is a truth universally acknowledged…”
The trailer begins with the Bennet sisters Jane and Lizzy discussing their possible futures, with Lizzy assuming she’d be a governess or a spinster or a wife and a mother. And then, for the Austen fans who love little gestures, like a hand flex, the first glimpse of Jack Lowden’s Mr. Darcy is him being all stoic and rolling up his sleeves as he throws a stone across his estate lake. The trailer is peppered with enough scenes of Lowden's Darcy casting yearning looks at Corrin's Elizabeth, whether at the ball or at their little meetings, and Lizzy’s teasing banter with Darcy, including the piano scene where he sits beside her when she plays it. And it serves fan expectations well.

The series is written by British author and screenwriter Dolly Alderton (“Everything I Know About Love”) and directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). At the Jane Austen festival in September this year, Alderton had confirmed that the six episodes will be a faithful and classic adaptation of the beloved novel, but will also take “some thoughtful creative turns,” which is the most anticipated discovery for most Austen lovers.
The trailer does tease those turns with some of the casting choices and even Liz Bennet's tone of voice. The series format has also allowed the writers to explore the lives of the other four Bennet sisters, as well as the supporting characters. One particular dynamic that seems to excite this writer is the one between Colman’s Mrs. Bennet and Sewell’s Mr. Bennet, considering they’re both fabulous actors who could paint an interesting picture of marital compromise and friendship. Furthermore, we get a nice look at the hilarious clumsiness of Mr. Collins, the genial awkwardness of Mr. Bingley and the charming aura of Partridge’s deviously handsome Mr. Wickham, who we must fall for before we hate. There has been some chatter around the latter's casting due to his age, and will be one of the bits keenly evaluated by fans. However, the visuals look stunning, warm and summery, like returning to your favorite story. And the score elevates it, though whether it will compare to "Dawn" from the 2005 film remains to be seen.

All in all, the first in-depth look at the world of Dolly Alderton’s Pride and Prejudice ought to make any fan, to quote the 2005 film with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, “completely and perfectly and incandescently happy”. "Pride and Prejudice" will arrive on Netflix on December 3, 2026.
