After ‘The Odyssey’, Movie Buffs Want Christopher Nolan To Take On Existential Horror Next

For a filmmaker whose name is synonymous with mind-bending sci-fi, ticking-clock thrillers, and sweeping historical epics, the question of what Christopher Nolan should conquer next is one of cinema’s most compelling riddles. Having pushed IMAX cameras and practical scale to their absolute limits with "The Odyssey", the auteur finds himself at a fascinating crossroads. Where do you go when you’ve already mastered the blockbuster?

We put the question to the Variety India community across Instagram and YouTube, asking you to vote on four uncharted genres Nolan has yet to tackle: Existential Horror, A Non-Linear Rom-Com, A Complex Whodunit, or A Gritty High-Plains Western.

On Instagram, Existential Horror claimed the top spot with a commanding 56% of the votes. Audiences were split on the remaining options, with A Complex Whodunit bringing in 19% and A Gritty High-Plains Western following closely at 18%. Bringing up the rear was A Non-Linear Rom-Com, gathering just 8% of the community's backing.

Over on YouTube, Existential Horror secured another dominant victory with 49% of the votes. The platform saw a tied race for second place, as A Complex Whodunit and A Non-Linear Rom-Com both locked in 24%. Meanwhile, YouTube voters almost completely brushed off A Gritty High-Plains Western, which pulled in a mere 2%.

More than half of our audience across both platforms wants to see Nolan swap grand scale for deep-seated dread. Given his masterclasses in tension — from “Dunkirk’s” relentless ticking clock to “Oppenheimer’s” haunting auditorium sequence — an existential horror film from Nolan feels like a match made in cinematic heaven.

Whether he chooses to build terrifying psychological mazes or flip romantic comedy on its head, one thing is certain: whatever Nolan does next, the world will be watching in IMAX.
