Karisma Kapoor on Her ’90s Fashion Legacy: ‘I am So Happy That the Current Generation Appreciates It’

Long before nostalgia became a trend and Gen Z began recreating Bollywood’s most iconic looks on social media, Karisma Kapoor was already setting fashion benchmarks on screen. From the athleisure-inspired outfits in “Dil To Pagal Hai” and the glamorous ensembles in “Hero No. 1” to the colorful, trendsetting looks in “Coolie No. 1” and “Judwaa,” Kapoor’s fashion choices in the 1990s made her one of Hindi cinema’s most stylish stars. Decades later, many of those looks have found a new lease of life, with younger audiences revisiting and recreating her iconic style.

Ask her whether she ever imagined her ’90s looks would one day become a pop-culture movement, and Kapoor says she has always had a deep love for fashion. “Actually, I’ve always loved fashion right from the beginning. I think apart from, of course, acting and the love of cinema, the other two aspects of me have always been the love of dance and fashion. So I’m so happy that the hard work we put in then is appreciated by the current generation, Gen Z kids, and millennials. And I think it’s a wonderful feeling to know that and to identify with them,” she shares.

The actor, who has been part of films like ‘Jeet,’ ‘Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge’ and ‘Raja Hindustani’ as well as women-centric films like ‘Fiza’ and ‘Zubeidaa,’ also reflects on her extensive filmography and whether there is a film of hers that she believes would have found a bigger audience if released today. “You know, honestly, if I may say so, I’m very thankful and grateful. I’ve been part of some very amazing films. Whatever the fate may be, they’ve been very, very memorable, which the audience loves,” she signs off.
