From ‘Elle’ to ‘The X-Files’, How The Audience’s Love For Nostalgia Is Bringing Back Cult Franchises
Nostalgia has often been a great bait to lure audiences in, but there’s no denying it's been working overtime lately. Take “Elle”, for example. Prime Video’s upcoming series is a prequel to Reese Witherspoon’s “Legally Blonde”, set two decades after the first film. And its arrival comes in the wake of a cancelled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot, which has fans up in arms, and the announcement of a series adaptation of Anne Hathaway's "Ella Enchanted" on Disney+, which has sparked excitement.
From decades-old franchises (“The Princess Diaries”) returning with new instalments, to 90s and early 2000s film and TV cult titles revived with remakes and reboots (“Baywatch”), pop culture nostalgia has been out there pulling a “Bend and Snap” on our emotions. And the audience is lapping it up.
Series
Elle: From the World of Legally Blonde
Inspired by Netflix’s "Wednesday", Reese Witherspoon decided the world could benefit from finding out what Elle Woods would be like as a high schooler. "Elle: From the World of Legally Blonde" explores the beloved character’s teen years in Seattle and is headlined by Lexi Minetree as Elle. It arrives on Prime Video on June 5, 2026.
Cape Fear
John MacDonald’s 1957 novel, “The Executioners”, has had two adaptations: A 1962 J. Lee Thompson film with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, titled “Cape Fear”, and a 1991 remake with the same name, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange and Nick Nolte. Now, Apple TV brings back the psychological thriller as a 10-episode miniseries, featuring Javier Bardem, Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson, set to premiere on June 5, 2026.
Scrubs Season 10
After running for nine seasons (2001 - 2010) on ABC, the nine episodes of Season 10 served as a revival of the much-loved medical comedy series. Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke and Donald Faison reprised their characters from the original.

The Devil Wears Prada 2
Set 20 years after the original "The Devil Wears Prada" (2026), the legacy sequel reunites Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), Nigel (Stanley Tucci), Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) for another strut on the Runway. Along with being a timely sequel, the sequel’s marketing capitalised on everything that wasn’t available to it during the first one: the nostalgia, the established star power, and the social media buzz.
Freakier Friday
Did anyone ask for a "Freaky Friday" (2003) sequel? Not really. But was it fun and emotional to revisit the soul-swapping comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray also reprising their parts from the original in "Freakier Friday" (2025)? Definitely.
Hocus Pocus 3
The Sanderson Sisters of “Hocus Pocus” (1993) just refuse to die. And for good reason, because their second outing in “Hocus Pocus 2” (2022), which releases on Disney+, was quite the fan service. The black candle has been lit once more, with a second sequel, “Hocus Pocus 3”, officially announced, with plans of a possible theatrical release. The witchy sisters, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, are confirmed to return.
Practical Magic 2
Another beloved 90s film about witches found it practical to return with a sequel almost two decades later? Must be the nostalgic fumes in the air. "Practical Magic 2", releasing on September 11, 2026, will have Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing and Dianne West returning, alongside a new cast that includes Lee Pace, Joey King, Maisie Williams and Xolo Maridueña. It is directed by Susanne Bier ("The Night Manager", "Bird Box").

The Princess Diaries 3
2026 really is Anne Hathaway’s year, because after one legacy sequel, she’s already locked in for another. "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" (2004) is getting a follow-up, directed by Adele Lim (Joy Ride). As per "The Princess Diaries" author Meg Cabot’s recent revelations at a BookCon panel, Robert Schwartzman (Michael Moscovitz) and Chris Pine (Lord Nicholas Devereux) from the first two films have parts written for them in the third, and could return.
Bridget Jones: Mad About A Boy
"Bridget Jones’s Diary" has had two sequels already, but the film franchise based on Helen Fielding’s novels had one more story to tell, and told it well. Almost a decade after "Bridget Jones’s Baby" (2016), "Bridget Jones: Mad About A Boy" arrived, based on Fielding’s third novel of the same name. All three leads—Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant—returned, along with most of the supporting cast, joined by Leo Woodall as Bridget’s newest love interest.
The Naked Gun
Based on the 1982 parody TV series "Police Squad!", "The Naked Gun" as a franchise had three films under its belt from 1988 to 1994, with Leslie Nielsen reprising his character, Lt. Frank Drebin, from the series. In 2025, over 20 years after "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult", the franchise was rebooted with Liam Neeson playing Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. amidst much box office and critical appreciation for its humor.
Karate Kid: Legends
The first "Karate Kid" film arrived in 1984. But since then, the franchise has been kept alive with multiple sequels and a reboot, an animated TV series (1989) and the "Cobra Kai" series on Netflix that ran for six seasons, ending in February 2025. In the same year, "Karate Kid: Legends", the sixth film in the long-running franchise, was released as a sequel to the 2010 "Karate Kid" and "Cobra Kai", with Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles.
Happy Gilmore 2
The beloved 1996 sports comedy starring Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore returned in 2025 with a sequel, bringing his character back to professional golf for the sake of his family. Sandler is joined by his co-actors from the first film, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller, with Bad Bunny and Benny Safdie as new additions.
Camp Rock 3
The Jonas Brothers are back at Camp Rock for a third film, some 15 years after "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam". They are also executive producers alongside alum Demi Lovato, who won’t be appearing in the film. The sequel is set to release in August 2026 on Disney+.
