‘Cocktail 2’ Box Office: Shahid Kapoor’s Film Holds Steady on Discount Tuesday, but Questions Remain Over the Rom-Com Genre’s Theatrical Ceiling

“Cocktail 2” maintained a steady hold at the Indian box office on Tuesday, collecting an estimated ₹6.2 crore nett and taking its five-day domestic total to ₹58.75 crore. The figure was broadly in line with Monday's performance despite discounted ticket pricing, suggesting that the offer delivered only a marginal boost to business.

The coming two days will be crucial in determining where the film's first week lands. Current trade estimates project a closing first-week total in the ₹65 crore to ₹70 crore range.

Directed by Homi Adajania and starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna, the film opened strongly and surpassed the opening day performance of the 2012 original. However, its weekday trajectory has also reopened a familiar industry conversation: whether the urban romantic comedy can still expand meaningfully as a theatrical genre without offering audiences a fresh hook or a new storytelling perspective.

Unlike many recent entries in the category, “Cocktail 2” arrives with comparatively high production values and significant star power. Yet the film's weekday performance suggests that audience turnout remains selective, even for well-mounted romantic dramas. Trade observers have increasingly pointed to the need for stronger novelty, evolving character dynamics and sharper differentiation if the genre is to attract larger theatrical footfalls.

The comparison with the original “Cocktail” is also instructive. Released in 2012, the Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty starrer enjoyed a relatively clear runway at the box office and generated the bulk of its business during its first week. “Cocktail 2,” meanwhile, is preparing to face fresh competition from upcoming releases including “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Alpha,” making its hold through the remainder of the week particularly significant.

The Shahid Kapoor starrer film's performance highlights a broader challenge facing the romantic comedy genre. While audience appetite for relationship-driven stories remains evident, the theatrical market has become increasingly competitive, and rising production costs have altered the economics of the genre. As a result, films must not only draw audiences but also justify budgets that are considerably higher than they were a decade ago.

For now, “Cocktail 2” remains on course for a respectable first week. Whether it can sustain momentum once new releases enter the marketplace will determine if the film emerges as a meaningful win for the genre or simply a reminder of its current limitations at the box office.
