Tamil film industry is again stuck in a stand-off as producers, distributors and cinema hall owners are in a disagreement over when films should be made available on OTT. The matter has now reached the Tamil Nadu Government with producers seeking the government’s help in this matter. On August 22, The Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Film Active Producers Association announced that they would stop release of Tamil films from September 1. Ongoing film shoots will also be suspended as well as post-production work on films.
This decision was taken after Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation placed a set of conditions for theatrical releases and OTT premieres. Tamil Nadu film producers have said that this decision was taken without holding a discussion with them and other stakeholders in the film industry. They have reached out to Tamil Nadu CM, Joseph Vijay and his cabinet to help them find a solution.

Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation are adamant on having an eight-week window period for a film to run in theatres. Many movies are now making it to streaming in a shorter period of time. This is the main point of disagreement between the two parties. This is not a new issue and has been discussed for some time now.
Producers have expressed their displeasure in the manner the two bodies placed their demands. In a statement, they said extensive talks should have been held with all stakeholders before they took such a decision. Movies in other South India states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala come in OTT pretty soon after theatrical release.
The statement from producers read: “When such decisions are made, consultations should have been held with all stakeholders to ensure that no party is affected. Only then should such announcements be made. Therefore, this unilateral decision of the distributors federation and the theatre owners association is unacceptable to producers." Theatre owners have hinted that they are willing to sit down with producers to find a mutually beneficial solution.
Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association Secretary S Sridhar was quoted as saying to IANS, “There are a number of films slotted for release in the coming weeks from September. We will all get together, hold talks and look to find a solution to the issue."
