Ranbir Kapoor Defends ‘Ramayana”s CGI Amid Social Media Backlash: ‘It’s Tricky to Impress the Audience’

Ranbir Kapoor has come out in defence of the visual effects in Nitesh Tiwari directed upcoming epic "Ramayana," amid social media criticism of the film’s CGI. The actor highlighted the extensive work that goes into creating large-scale visual effects and said audiences have become increasingly conscious of CGI, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence.

“Many people online would become CGI critics. They see a trailer and say it’s not good enough. They say it’s not done (well). People are getting more aware, especially with the influx of AI. People are more interested in how good the CGI is and how it would look once the film releases,” Ranbir said.

The actor pointed out that the perception of CGI has changed significantly in recent years. With audiences becoming more familiar with AI-generated imagery and visual effects, they are also paying closer attention to the technical aspects of films and questioning how certain visuals are created. “It’s quite funny sometimes, because people who don’t know how CGI is done think someone used AI to release something,” he said, emphasizing the difference between AI-generated content and the painstaking visual-effects process involved in a major film like “Ramayana.”

According to Ranbir, the making of the film has involved years of work by VFX artistes and technicians. He also highlighted the involvement of director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra in the process. “There are countless hours of work where artistes have been working for years. I have seen Nitesh (Tiwari) and Namit (Malhotra) sitting on countless VFX calls, ever since this project started. They are even trying to get a certain color of the sky right,” Ranbir said.

The actor acknowledged that meeting audience expectations has become increasingly challenging, especially when it comes to creating realistic and authentic visual effects. “It is tricky right now to impress the audience with authentic CGI,” he added.

“Ramayana,” directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is one of the most ambitious Indian films currently in production. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The makers have recently released the trailer, which shows glimpses from the movie, while also building anticipation for its release on November 6 internationally and November 8 in India.
